Women of the Way: Embracing the Camino

Women of the Way: Embracing the Camino

What do you like most when reading about adventures: descriptions about the terrain, the culture, the challenges, the personal growth, the interactions between other adventures? Women of the Way: Embracing the Camino successfully combines all these elements in a heartfelt and personal recounting of Jane V. Blanchard’s 2011 five-hundred mile pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago-hiking from St-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France over the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles in Spain, and then westward across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostella. For over a millennium, Christians have made this pilgrimage to the cathedral in Santiago, where the remains of St. James the apostle are entombed. Today, this journey is known as a European Cultural Itinerary, attracting people from around the world. In 2011, more than 183,000 people completed the pilgrimage; 44% of these pilgrims were women. Though Women of the Way is about Jane’s journey on the Camino de Santiago (also known as “The Way”) and discussions with women she met on the pilgrimage, this is not a “chic” book. It is about embracing the Camino, the personal changes, and the beauty and appeal of the most popular of all the pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela, the Camino Frances. Discover why people from around the world walk the Camino. Learn how to prepare for the Camino, about the daily rituals in long-distance walking, and the camaraderie shared among these modern-day pilgrims. Visualize the beauty of northern Spain through Jane’s vivid descriptions. Understand why so many people embrace the Camino. “An articulate, well-observed and thoughtful look at walking the Camino.” ~ Adam Nathan “I felt as though I, too, was a pilgrim as I saw the beautiful landscapes Jane described, felt the tiredness she experienced, enjoyed the food along with her, laughed and cried with her.” ~ Elizabeth Chandler “My husband, John (62), and I are reading your book while we prepare to walk the Camino in May of 2013. We are lovin

Weekly Address: Immigration Accountability Executive Action

President Barack Obama tapes the Weekly Address at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas, Nev., Nov. 21, 2014.

In this week’s address, the President laid out the steps he took this past week to fix our broken immigration system. Enacted within his legal authority, the President’s plan focuses on cracking down on illegal immigration at the border; deporting felons, not families; and accountability through criminal background checks and taxes. These are commonsense steps, but only Congress can finish the job.

As the President acts, he’ll continue to work with Congress on a comprehensive, bipartisan bill — like the one passed by the Senate more than a year ago — that can replace these actions and fix the whole system.

Mike Brown’s Mom Urges Ferguson Protesters To Remain Peaceful

FERGUSON, Mo. — The mother of Michael Brown, the unarmed 18-year-old shot dead by a police officer in this St. Louis suburb on Aug. 9, urged protesters to stay peaceful Saturday night as they waited to find out if a grand jury will indict the officer for killing her son.

“I just want y’all to be careful. Don’t agitate them, don’t let them agitate y’all. I don’t want nobody getting hurt,” Lesley McSpadden told the crowd gathered along Canfield Drive, just feet from where her son was killed. While most protesters do not expect the officer, Darren Wilson, to be indicted in Brown’s death, McSpadden urged them to keep the faith.

“We all willing to do something, but I don’t want nobody getting hurt, see what I’m saying?” she said. “Because when it’s time to walk into the courtroom, I want all y’all with me.”

Brown’s father, Michael Brown Sr., has made similar pleas for peace in recent days, as have Attorney General Eric Holder and President Barack Obama.

Following the emotional message from McSpadden, and after the crowd joined hands in a circle around the memorial for a prayer, a small number of protesters marched down West Florissant Avenue for the second time that evening, passing boarded-up storefronts.

“Rain, sleet, hail, snow, hell no, we won’t go,” they chanted as rain fell from the night sky.

Soon, about a dozen police cars came driving along West Florissant, and a number of them pulled into a parking lot behind a building. When demonstrators saw where the vehicles were sitting, they headed toward them to protest along a fence. The police left the area, and the small group of demonstrators continued marching along the street.

The Impact and Lasting Legacy of Ferguson, Missouri and Michael Brown

As we wait for the grand jury decision about Michael Brown’s death, I cannot help but wonder how we understand, process and respect the differences in the legacy and imprint of his death and the protests and unrest in Ferguson Missouri, and how different these tragedies are seen/felt by many of us.

I sat in an airport business lounge recently nervously watching the CNN coverage of Ferguson, and the grand jury decision. Like many, I want a decision to be made, and want there to be peace in Ferguson. I was nervous that a decision would be announced, and that whatever the decision would be, others around me would make insensitive comments or declarations without a level of mindfulness or compassion about others around them.

I am keenly aware that people have different beliefs and about ideas about the Michael Brown shooting, and what has been happening in Ferguson. I am grateful that I live in a country where people can have their own opinions and freedom of expression. I do not always expect others to agree with me. I do question the current day climate for civil discourse, mindful communication, empathy and understanding of a much a larger and complex social and political history and context.

When the verdict about the Trayvon Martin shooting occurred in 2012, I vividly remember being home alone, and watching the verdict. I was shocked and disappointed. I was able to deal with my own emotions and feelings, and did not have to explain the emotions, nor put them in context, or connect them to a deeper historical legacy.

For many of us, the shooting death of Michael Brown cannot be seen in isolation, nor will the grand jury decision. There are historical legacies and events that bring up questions of bias, profiling, police presence, protest, the valuing/devaluing of lives, and the tragic loss of a young Black man.

Social media can often be often be an unscientific “temperature check” for the different viewpoints and expressions of confusion, fear, anger, disappointment and conscious and unconscious bias. In some ways, the world of short blogs and 140 characters is symbolic of the all too prevalent overly simplified analyses, and sensational headlines that might generation “likes” and “retweets,” but do not bring us to a better understanding of people, communities or our history.

Mark Williams, in his book Ten Lenses: Your Guide to Living and Working in a Multicultural World, asks us to think about how our Legacies+ Layers= and Lenses and how we view the world. Williams explains that our “layers” are the aspects of our identity (race, gender, age, sexual orientation, language, ability, education, etc.) Our “legacies” are our ancestors’ experiences.

Sociology and anthropology have additional theoretical ways of looking at groups, identity and connection. What Williams offers us is a very simple and clear way to think about how events and life experiences impact the way we view the world.

This could be a challenging model for those that believe that people need to “get over” things that have happened in the past. This is not to suggest that we do not acknowledge and celebrate progress, and the many changes that have been made a societal, national, and international level. It does however challenge us to think more holistically about the power and historical legacy of certain language, media images, and tragedies like Michael Brown’s death.

In October of 2014, the Wall Street Journal reported that Governor Nixon formed a commission that would “to study and recommend ways to address underlying, systemic inequality.”

The commission was formed after the protests and unrest, with the awareness that there is a legacy of inequality in Ferguson Missouri. It is a legacy that many have chosen not to see.

The protest and unrest that followed the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson has been summarized by some with a generalized blanketing of individual behaviors to whole communities, and evaluations of complex situations with inaccurate collective blame. The virulent posts about looting and “thugs,” often assess the events in Ferguson with a focus on highlighted criminality, and generalizations of the protests as nothing more than rampant looting.

I do not condone criminality or looting… nor do the majority of people in Ferguson, or those who support the people in Ferguson. My focus is more on the pain of the Michael Brown’s family, the unrest after the shooting, and the legacies of inadequate educational access, poverty and related challenges.

Michael Brown’s father recently shared a poignant video message acknowledging what was happening in Ferguson. He shared that he wants the grand jury decision to lead to “incredible change; positive change; change that makes the St. Louis region better for everyone.” He also cautioned that “hurting others or destroying property is not the answer.”

Civil Rights activist, professor and author Mel King views Ferguson through his experiences and the legacies of segregation and civil rights. In a recent interview he stated that “no one addresses the crimes against humanity, and every time something like this happens (Ferguson,) it is a crime against humanity.” For King, Ferguson is tied to a much bigger picture, that includes his life experiences and a history of social justice, struggle, community empowerment, and civil rights.

Dr. Ancella Livers, is a renowned Executive coach, and expert in leadership and leadership solutions. In her article entitled “Skittles and Race in the Workplace,” she talks about how the Trayvon Martin shooting is part of her consciousness, and connected to her worries and fears about her own sons. She writes “I know that I am not alone. I know there are other mothers, sisters, aunts and friends out there who carry such fears about their brown sons, their gay ones, their Muslim and Jewish ones. But there are few places for us to share these worries and fears.” Her courageous vulnerability reminds us that the Trayvon Martin shooting is a legacy for her, and for others, and that is not something that can be checked at the door.

Moving Forward

In August, we read about a school that banned discussions about Michael Brown’s death, and the protests in Ferguson. In the age of school shootings, and numerous challenges to healthy school communities, we can intellectually understand the desire to protect the students from information that could be scary and overwhelming.

However, I also believe that there was perhaps a missed opportunity for learning.
In my global diversity and inclusion and coaching work, I have learned that learning and dialogue about our layers, legacies and lenses can lead to better relationships at the individual and organizational levels. Banned topics do not cease to be discussed. Banning a conversation sends a message about a topic, and leads to discussions that often cannot benefit from diverse perspectives, life experiences, or the sharing of legacies.

Moving forward, I would hope that we create conversations that allow for nuances, the learning of different legacies, and the connection to our national and global communities.

Recent research in the U.K. linked happiness to a child’s emotional health. They discuss emotional health as a predictor of future happiness. There are potentially severe implications and questions for children growing up reading about/seeing the news of Michael Brown’s death, and the protests in Ferguson without healthy opportunities for support, sharing, and learning. What are some of the legacies that will impact children in the future? How can we help support and nurture the emotional health of all young people in an age of economic and educational disparity? How can we help children (and adults,) understand the different legacies that shape the way we view what happens our country and world? How can we help children process the deaths of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown so that they understand that all lives do matter?

As we wait for the grand jury decision, I would advocate for a deeper awareness of the legacies, and an awareness Michael Brown’s death, the protests in Ferguson, and the grand jury decision will indeed be a legacy for people around the world.

Powerful Lessons in Gratitude

As I write this, I am coming to terms with the death of a good friend of mine who was killed in a tragic accident over the weekend. The last 48 hours have been very difficult. My emotions have been on a roller coaster. However, I realize that even in death we have the opportunity to celebrate the beauty of life. Most of us are getting ready for the great holiday that we call Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is always one of my favorite times of the year. I love sitting around the table with family, eating some of my favorite dishes and expressing gratitude for the many blessings in my life. Thanksgiving is not just a once-a-year event. Thanksgiving is a lifestyle that you can cultivate every single day of your life. Gratitude has been the key to every success and every victory in my life. Here are a few secrets about the power of gratitude.

1. Gratitude is the greatest driver of success in your life. I have coached leaders and business professionals and empowered them to achieve great success. However, the first lesson I teach any client is a lesson in gratitude. While some give me a bewildered look, I assure them that this is the key to unlocking a life of success and prosperity. In fact, for almost 20 years I have written down three to five things that I am grateful for every single night. This exercise in gratitude yielded remarkable results. Not only did I find myself more grateful but I found myself reaching greater goals and rising to my greatest potential. Your life will never be the same when you make this practice part of your life.

2. Gratitude is the greatest way to silence the ego. One of the greatest things I learned about gratitude is that it empowers you to get out of our own way. So many times we are being directed by our own desires. We live in a world where everyone is so consumed with me, myself and I. This is not to throw off on any one because I have done the same thing. However, as I really embraced gratitude as a practice in my life it forced me to deal with selfishness. I learned that it is not always about what I want. Gratitude teaches you that things will not always go your way. Gratitude assures you no matter what you go through in your life that something good will come out of it. I found myself losing the “me” perspective and gaining a “we” perspective. Gratitude opens the heart and unleashes the true power of love. Gratitude silences your ego and destroys the seed of selfishness.

3. Gratitude helps you appreciate every moment of your life. As I stated earlier, I just lost a friend in a tragic accident. While loss triggers a number of different responses, no matter how much it hurts gratitude flows from my heart. I am grateful for the opportunity to have known such a great human being. The thing I love about gratitude is that it changes your perspective about life. I am able to be thankful for the beautiful trees. I find myself being thankful for silence. Even more amazing is that I find myself appreciating adversity. I find myself thankful for every trial and every tragedy. I realize that when you can be thankful for every moment of your life you enjoy the beauty of life and you experience life at a different level. We shift from being unconscious, unloving and ungrateful human beings to conscious, compassionate and grateful human beings. Gratitude changes us for the better.

4. Gratitude produces a more meaningful life. We are all on a quest to become the greatest expression of ourselves. No other force empowers us to become our greater selves like gratitude. The more grateful I am the more authentic I become. As human beings the thing we all crave is contentment. We live in a culture that encourages covetousness; however, when you live a heart-centered life your goal is contentment. When you become advanced in the practice of gratitude you will contend against allowing anything to compromise your contentment. Contentment is living at such a place that nothing has the power to move you. When you are content you are not disturbed by the detours of life. Contentment produces peace. Contentment is assurance that everything in your life is working together for your good. Contentment is living in the flow of life.

Give Us this Day

Give Us this Day

This is a short story about the people of the small, mountain town of Arborview under the pressure of isolation and threats when the metropolis down the hill is attacked by terrorists. Martial law and news reports of bio-terrorist events in the city frighten the population normally used to a quiet, rural atmosphere. Some are inclined to take the law into their own hands instead of leaving it to the local sheriff. Others see an opportunity to cash in on selling supplies. Most are just worried about their friends and families in the city. But when a stranger hikes into town from the back road the threat moves them to take action. The stranger shows up all around town observing their nervous preparations to defend themselves and their property. One couple’s daughter, impatient with the situation, leaves town down the same back road from which activists expect an invasion. Then their main source of food, the grocery store, catches fire. The church has called for an all town prayer meeting and the whole town is gathered unsuspecting that the stranger has been seen heading that direction. Will the volunteer militia catch him before he wipes out the population of Arborview in one sweep?

What to Do When You’re Not Bombing: Think for a Change

I often disagree with New York Times columnist Tom Friedman. But with his latest column, he’s made a contribution to our malfunctioning political culture: He demonstrates self-reflection, a good faith effort at honesty, and relative freedom from the penchant for politically correct, “do something” tactics of knee-jerk violence. Most significant, he models what learning from (war) experience might look like. The column should be required reading for policy makers and “deciders” leading us, bleating, down the primrose path to bloody war yet again.

Friedman calls it like it is:

Ever since the Arab awakening in late 2010, America has lurched from one policy response to another. We tried decapitation without invasion in Libya; it failed. We tried abdication in Syria; it failed. We tried democratization in Egypt, endorsing the election of the Muslim Brotherhood; it failed. We tried invasion, occupation, abdication and now re-intervention in Iraq and, although the jury is still out, only a fool would be optimistic.

Just because it’s cliché doesn’t mean it’s not true:

Maybe the beginning of wisdom is admitting that we don’t know what we’re doing out here…

Calls it like it is again:

We don’t have the will to invest overwhelming force for the time it would take to reshape any of these places — and, even if we did, it is not clear it would work. (Tom: “It is clear: It wouldn’t work.”)

He “has a take,” as sports talk-show host Jim Rome says, and, as Rome likes to say, “it doesn’t suck”:

So if the Middle East is a region we can neither fix nor ignore, what’s left? I’m for “containment” and “amplification.”

Although I don’t agree with every national assessment he makes, and he leaves out Israel, his strategy exemplifies what both Western medicine and Buddhism hold critical: “First Do No Harm” — a calculus for good:

Where there is disorder — Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya — collaborate with regional forces to contain it, which is basically what we’re doing today. I just hope we don’t get in more deeply. Where there is imposed order — Egypt, Algeria — work quietly with the government to try to make that order more decent, just, inclusive and legitimate. Where there is already order and decency — Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon, Kurdistan and the United Arab Emirates — do everything to amplify it, so it becomes more consensual and sustainable. And where there is order, decency and democracy — Tunisia — give it as much money as they ask for, (which we haven’t done).

He lays out working principles, based on lessons learned:

…Never forget: We can only amplify what they do. When change starts [with] or depends on our staying power, it is not self-sustaining — the most important value in international relations.

After a long segment touting Dubai (no comment), he elaborates an often touted, rarely learned principle articulated by retired Lt Gen Daniel Bolger in his new book, Why We Lost.

The point: It has to start with them. The best we can do is amplify. David Kilcullen, the Australian counterinsurgency expert who served with the U.S. in Iraq and Afghanistan, told me: “Just like there is a spark of life in a physical body, there has to be a spark of legitimacy and coherence in a body politic. And, if it is not there, trying to substitute for it is like putting a cadaver on a slab and harnessing a lightning bolt to it to bring it back to life. You end up with Dr. Frankenstein. You can animate a corpse and make it walk and talk, but sooner or later it’s going to go rogue. … When you don’t have the local leadership, invading does not make things better. It makes them worse.”

Letters Left in London By Anonymous

2014-11-21-1.jpg

For over a year now I have been writing letters to strangers anonymously and leaving them around London for someone to find in the hope that I will bring some warmth, comfort or encouragement to that person. Why, you may ask?

I’m something of a loner, but I like people. I like to think about how connected we all are, and how in different circumstances the stranger I want to poke for barging past me in the street could just as easily be someone I care about very deeply. Imagine a stranger who is doing something to annoy you suddenly falls down in front of you. They are very ill and need your help. I’ll hedge a bet that you’re one of the many good people in the world and that you go to help that person. You do your best, you call an ambulance, you reassure the person, the ambulance comes and takes them away. You know only their first name. My guess is that you now care about that person. I bet that you will think about that person afterwards and wonder how they are, you will hope they are okay. That’s what I mean.

It is from this place that I write the letters. I take a pen and write without planning what to write. Sometimes I’ll find a quote and write it down with a little related message to go with it or I will just write something from scratch. When I write I picture a person who feels the kinds of things that I feel and with similar needs to my own, and I address them from that place. I make a point of not to correcting or editing the letters even if I have made grammatical or spelling mistakes because I see it as an act of humility and a challenge to my perfectionism. Also it just makes them feel a bit more special, like they come from a more honest place.

A question I often get asked is if I hear back from many of the people who have found the letters, and the answer is no, none. This is because I don’t leave any way for the finder to get in touch with me. Let me tell you, I have a bit of an ego as we all do, and I think leaving the letters without any way of being contacted means that the act has to be truly unconditional and without expectation. I often wonder if anyone actually opens the letters they find, and just hope that they do. There was one occasion when I left a letter on a train and someone picked it up before I got off. The woman looked confused, opened it and I watched a smile erupt — it was magical. So if that lady opened one surely others must?!

2014-11-21-4.jpg

2014-11-21-5.jpg

What I have noticed from writing all these letters (I’ve written over 150 now) is that when I read them back I have often written something that I actually needed to hear without realizing it. And so these things I do to try to be kind cannot be separated from me even when they are given away. This is how it is with unconditional giving: you always get back so much more than you gave. I hope you enjoy reading some of the letters because they are to you, dear stranger, too.

You can find all the letters I’ve written so far at www.lettersleftinlondon.tumblr.com and on twitter @lettersinlondon.

Letters Left in London is a one woman (anonymous) letter writing project aiming to put a little goodness into the world. Letters are hand-written to strangers and left around London for people to find.

Thanksgiving Travel Turns Into Tragedy

If our everyday lives are hectic, then the holidays are doubly so. How many times have you stayed up late cleaning, packing or worse — driving through the night to get to your destination to “start your vacation?” While the holidays are a memorable time of year for families, each of us can relate to the time pressures and stress that go hand-in-hand with special events, creating an even greater demand on our time.

This week, you may have read about a family whose dream vacation turned into a tragedy. Michael and Trudi Hardman spent nine months planning a Thanksgiving trip to Disney World with their six children. On Nov. 19, they left their home in Texas for Orlando to make that dream come true.

The Hardman’s teenage son, Andrew, a newly licensed 16-year-old, was taking a turn behind the wheel and may have fallen asleep just before 11 p.m. near Shreveport, LA. After veering to the left and then over-correcting to the right, the SUV rolled on the interstate, killing both parents and three of the children. Only two occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash; the others were ejected from the vehicle.

My heart aches for the Hardman family. It is a shattering and deeply painful loss — life ending for five people, and life-altering for the three who did not perish. What, if anything, can be learned from a terrible situation like this one?

Seat Belts Save Lives
Buckle up — every time, every trip. We could save 150 lives this Thanksgiving if everyone wore their seat belt. If the car is moving, don’t unstrap yourself or your child to get more comfortable or take a nap — the laws of physics are the same whether you are awake or asleep.

2014-11-21-seatbelt.jpg

Get Sleep
Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night, and teens and children need more. If you aren’t getting it, you are accumulating a sleep debt. The National Sleep Foundation estimates that drowsiness and falling asleep at the wheel cause more than 100,000 car crashes every year. When planning road trips, make sure you are well-rested, allow enough time to arrive at your destination, and if you get drowsy behind the wheel, get off the road and get some sleep — lives depend on it.

Inexperienced Drivers Crash More Often
For newly licensed drivers, the first year and the first thousand miles are the deadliest. Teens’ crash risk is three times that of more experienced drivers. The nighttime driving environment is even more complex, and it takes many years for drivers to be fully comfortable. Sixteen-year-old drivers are twice as likely to have a fatal crash at night, and most occur between 9 p.m. and midnight.

Spend time practicing and coaching your teen driver at night as often as possible. Also, if your state does not have a nighttime driving restriction, consider going beyond state laws and set household rules to limit risky nighttime driving. For help, sign a New Driver Deal, which is available at DriveitHOME.org.

Take Travel Seriously
We see a spike in fatalities on the roads every year during the holiday season. In fact, more than 400 fatalities and another 44,700 injuries are expected to occur from car crashes this Thanksgiving weekend alone. With 46 million people expected to take a trip this Thanksgiving, I urge you to take appropriate precautions as you hit the road:

  • Don’t drive through the night.
  • Buckle up.
  • Hands-free is not risk free. Stay alert behind the wheel and refrain from driving distracted.
  • Plan ahead and drive defensively, especially during bad weather.
  • Impairment starts with the first drink. Always designate a sober driver.

It is almost unbearable to think that there will be dozens of stories about families like the Hardman’s this Thanksgiving week. Don’t let your family be featured in one of them.

“We Were Strangers Once, Too”: The President Announces New Steps on Immigration

Watch on YouTube

"Scripture tells us that we shall not oppress a stranger, for we know the heart of a stranger — we were strangers once, too. My fellow Americans, we are and always will be a nation of immigrants. We were strangers once, too."

– President Obama, November 20, 2014

Since the founding of our nation, we've weaved a tradition of welcoming immigrants into the very fabric of who we are. It's what keeps us dynamic, entrepreneurial, and uniquely American.

But, as we know all too well, America's immigration system is broken. So tonight, President Obama addressed the nation on the executive actions he is taking to help fix what he can:

1. We will build on our progress at the border with additional resources for our law enforcement personnel.

Today, we have more agents and technology deployed to secure our southern border than at any time in our history. And over the past six years, illegal border crossings have been cut by more than half. Although this summer, there was a brief spike in unaccompanied children being apprehended at our border, the number of such children is now actually lower than it’s been in nearly two years. Overall, the number of people trying to cross our border illegally is at its lowest level since the 1970s.  Those are the facts.

2. We will make it easier and faster for high-skilled immigrants, graduates, and entrepreneurs to stay and contribute to our economy, as so many business leaders have proposed.

3. We will take steps to deal responsibly with the millions of undocumented immigrants who already live in our country.

Read more about the details of the President's actions at WhiteHouse.gov/Immigration-Action.

What Happens When You Declare War On Yourself?

In the truest sense of bipartisanship, the idiocy of the debate on the Keystone pipeline is convincing enough evidence that seriousness of thought, statesmanship, vision, wisdom, long-term thinking, rationality and responsibility for future generations has no place in the United States Senate when it comes to the seminal issue facing the species: namely, climate change. And of course over the ensuing months it is likely to get worse.

The most profoundly disturbing element in what is passing for serious debate and deliberation is the constant drumbeat from both sides of the aisle on the impacts of building this continental conduit for the perpetuation of global poisoning will have on individual states and jobs. While I certainly support increasing living wage jobs for all Americans, there are sensible ways to do this, i.e. through infrastructure projects that sustain communities, and there are stupid ways to do this, i.e. through worsening climate change and its impacts upon the species.

Something that has troubled me for many years, including more than two decades working on or with Congress, is the default mechanism of acting more like a like a city ward leader or county commissioner rather than a United States Congressman or Senator. Supporting a project merely because it will result in jobs for their constituents regardless of the impact it has on other states or the country is the height of parochial and small-thinking and does a disservice to the title of their elected office. Their ultimate responsibility is to represent what is best for the country, hence the title of being a Federal elected official. They take the oath of office swearing allegiance to the U.S. Constitution and not the Louisiana or West Virginia or North Dakota constitution.

There is an essential disregard for the concept of federalism, an extremely important component to the representative democratic government fashioned by the founding fathers who receive such patriotic adulation by the very same individuals who then proceed to violate the document they have sworn to uphold.

Adding further injury to insult is the sophomoric and absurd assertions that jobs created have no qualitative differences whatsoever. A job is a job is a job, and regardless of the consequence of its creation is valuable. Using this rationale going to war could be justified because of the job creation opportunities if affords. What a ridiculous proposition. Creating a job that helps destroy not only the enemy but also our own society gives new definition to insanity. And make no mistake about this, what we are facing directly here is a war on the human species aided and abetted by the continued exploitation of a fossil-fuel-driven economic paradigm that kills with no regard for age, sex, color, religion, geography, or position in life.

Just as absurd as the proposition that war is justified because of its job-creating potential is the reality that in essence contributing to human-induced atmospheric degradation is a declaration of war on the human species. And the scope of the declaration does not allow for surgical decimation of a perceived enemy. Climate change does not discriminate when imposing the harsh and deadly consequences of its actions; it affects your loved ones as well as your enemies. What must seriously question the importance of jobs created under such conditions.

In stark terms we are declaring war on ourselves, which unfortunately fits neatly into the contemporary political context that features people voting against their inherent self-interests. And such is the state of political dysfunction in American society today.

The Keystone pipeline implicates the United States in the continuing destruction being wrought by carbon-intensive energy, is antithetical to the ongoing efforts to invest in renewable resources and efforts to coordinate carbon reduction strategies with other countries like China, and is an assault on the scientific evidence that overwhelming validates the interaction between global warming and human activities. To suggest that it is a job creator and therefore this should override all other considerations is cynical, short-sighted and qualifies a rank stupidity. Those making this argument represent an assault upon rationality and common sense and an embarrassment to intelligent thought, regardless of their party. Is there any wonder that fear, anger and frustration command such a prominent role in the putrid participation rates in elections such as the one held just two weeks ago.

Unless we face the larger issue of whether we should continue our dependence upon fossil fuels, a finite resource, we will continue to be hamstrung by the absurd theater we witnessed yesterday. Make no mistake we will watch as this silliness not only continues but accelerates as the new Congress convenes in just a few short months. It is a sad commentary upon the sorry state of affairs that are certain to play out over the remaining two years of the Obama presidency. And yes there is no one to blame but ourselves.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

4 Strategies to Deal With a Guilt Tripper

Guilt trippers are world class blamers, martyrs and drama queens. They know how to make you feel badly about something by pressing your insecurity buttons. They use guilt to manipulate so you do what they desire. They like to see you squirm and throw you off your game. This gives them a sense of power and control.

Guilt can be conveyed with words, tone, or even a glance. Guilt trippers like to play dirty. To get their way, they exploit your desire to please them or be a good person. They often start sentences with, “If it wasn’t for you… ” or “Why don’t you ever… ?” They’ll talk about life being unfair and compare your efforts with others who’re doing it better. “Why can’t you be more like Buster — he’s so good to his wife and is such a hard worker.” They also remind you of how much they always do for you. After you’ve been guilt tripped, you may feel two inches tall if you believe these people’s crafty ploys.

Are You in a Relationship With a Guilt Tripper? Take This Quiz

To determine if you have a guilt tripper in your life answer Yes or No to the following questions. Then you can use the strategy in this section to protect yourself from being energetically drained by them.

  1. Do you know someone who tries to get their way or control you by making you feel guilty? Yes/No
  2. Do you know someone who makes you feel “less than” by constantly comparing you to others? Yes/No
  3. Do you know someone who acts like an angry victim? Yes/No
  4. Do you feel emotionally and/or physically drained after being with someone who is complaining or berating you? Yes/No
  5. Do you know someone who you are always trying to please but never seem to do things correctly? Yes/No

Results of the Quiz:
Give each Yes response one point and count up your score.

Your Score:
If you score 3 to 5 on the quiz then you are in relationship with a moderate to major guilt tripper. If the score is a 5 then the person could be verbally abusive. If you are not able to op out of the relationship be very careful of your interactions with this person and ensure that you have established good boundaries.

Action Steps to Deal with Guilt Trippers from The Ecstasy of Surrender

1. Surrender the notion that you have to be perfect

The guilt tripper tends to lose interest if you don’t go for their misguided manipulations. Everyone makes mistakes. It’s human. You don’t have to be perfect or squeaky clean. If you hurt someone or made a mistake, accept that you can’t change the past. But you can make amends when appropriate. Apologize for offending a relative, pay back money owed, or simply convey, “I wish I had been there for you more.” Focusing on solutions instead of wallowing in guilt is a way to surrender to positive forces, rather than succumbing to the pull of negativity.

2. Surrender guilt with tears
One physical way to release guilt if you’re fixated on a mistake you made or not meeting someone’s expectations is to cry. Do this when you’re alone or with a supportive person. Tears release stress hormones and help you heal. As you cry, your body expels guilt and tension. This helps you let it all go. Don’t fight the surrender of crying. Let tears cleanse stress from your body.

3. Know your guilt buttons
No one can make you feel guilty if don’t believe you’ve done something wrong. However, if you doubt yourself, guilt can creep in. Believing you are doing the best you can in a situation can quell any guilt and bring comfort no matter what anyone says.

4. Set limits
Start a conversation positively. In a matter-of-fact tone say, “I can see your point of view. But when you say (fill in the blank) my feelings are hurt. I’d be grateful if you didn’t keep repeating it.” You might make some topics taboo such as money, sex, or personal appearance. Keep the conversation light, don’t go for their bait, and try to gradually heal your insecurities so you don’t buy into their guilt trips.

Be aware that there’s a difference between healthy remorse and guilt. Remorse is regretting how a situation turned out or how you behaved. Then you can acknowledge the mistake and make amends. You’ll feel genuinely sorry, but you don’t stay stuck there. Guilt, however, is when you become attached to remorse and self-blame, a reverse form of ego where you keep focusing on a “lacking” or a mistake.

Kamala The Ugandan Giant, Former Pro Wrestler, Struggles As A Double Amputee

In the 1980s, Kamala the Ugandan Giant was one of the most feared wrestlers in what was then known as the WWF. Today, he’s a double amputee struggling to make ends meet.

The video above, produced by Bleacher Report, shows James Harris (a.k.a. Kamala) as he copes with the loss of both legs to diabetes.

The 6-foot-7 Mississippi native also recalls his decision to go into wrestling, done almost on a whim after he couldn’t find a job.

“They told me wrestling wasn’t real the day before I got in the ring,” said Harris.

Wrestling star and promoter Jerry Lawler created the character he would portray: a Ugandan giant.

“I’ve never been to Uganda,” Harris said with a laugh.

Harris would eventually go toe-to-toe with some of the biggest names in the sport, including Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. But he said he never made as much money as his fellow superstars.

“I wish things had worked out better for me. I believe the reason I got done that way is because I’m just a poor boy from down south in Mississippi. If I had been a better talker — you have to negotiate — that probably would’ve helped me.”

But Harris isn’t after pity.

“I don’t want people to feel sorry for me,” he said. “Because I’m still Kamala.”

But Kamala needs help. Harris’ wife was recently laid off. And shortly after the video was recorded, Harris was hospitalized with a severe stomach infection, Bleacher Report writer Jason King wrote in the comments section of a GoFundMe page set up by a fan to help the former wrestler.

A message on the Kamala Facebook page notes he has been in the hospital for about two weeks.

“Kamala was hoping to get out of the hospital yesterday, but his blood sugar dropped,” a message posted Thursday morning said. “He’s doing better than even a few days ago, but they are still holding onto him.”

Along with donating via GoFundMe, King noted that fans can help by purchasing Harris’ upcoming book, “Kamala Speaks.”

Anyone who grew up watching wrestling in the 1980s and 1990s should check out the video above and read King’s full story on Kamala over at The Bleacher Report.

Hardly any other architects office has, like the unit, specialized in developing architectural corporate identity (CI). Commissions have, as a result, been received from food chain stores such as Standa in Italy or Merkur in Austria, for whom CI is important. Other clients have been companies in branches with strong and flexible retail design, as well as offices and headquarters. An instantly recognizable CI always played a central part, and has since proved to have had a lasting influence on commercial success. All this is reflected in the book developed and designed by section.a and section.d (wall-paper): The chapters shopping, storing, banking and working have CI and the architecture of the unit as their subject, and the material is presented by means of lively illustrations and essays by a selected group of authors.

Vermont Will Stop Paying Jonathan Gruber For Health Care Work

Vermont officials said Wednesday they would stop paying Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist Jonathan Gruber for consulting on the state health care system after videos surfaced recently of him suggesting that the ”stupidity of the American voter” helped pass the Affordable Care Act.

Gruber, who helped the White House draft what has become known as Obamacare, had been paid $ 160,000 of a $ 400,000 Vermont contract to run economic models for a proposed health insurance system, the Burlington Free Press reported on Wednesday. Lawrence Miller, the chief of health care reform in Vermont, said in a statement that he expects Gruber to finish his work for the state, but would stop paying for his work. Miller added that the state would continue to issue paychecks to the graduate students working with Gruber.

Gruber declined to comment, the Free Press reported.

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin (D) on Tuesday sought to distance himself from Gruber’s videotaped remarks, but said the state needed the economist’s expertise.

“I am caught between a rock and a hard place,” Shumlin told told the Free Press. Three Republican state lawmakers sent a letter to Shumlin on Monday demanding that he terminate Gruber’s state contract.

According to The Washington Post, Gruber was hired by at least eight states to help implement the Affordable Care Act.

Videos unearthed recently of Gruber have stirred trouble for the economist and the health care law. Gruber, who was consulted by the White House on the bill in 2009, said during an appearance at the University of Pennsylvania in 2013 that the inability of the American voter to understand the content of the Affordable Care Act had helped the bill pass. Video of the remarks have been picked up by several news outlets recently, and the Obama administration has tried to distance itself from the economist.

“Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the ‘stupidity of the American voter’ or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical to getting the thing to pass,” Gruber said in the video.

In another video, Gruber says subsidies to help low-income Americans buy insurance are reserved for state-established exchanges. That video is being used in the legal challenge to Obamacare now making its way to the Supreme Court.
