The Dinner

The Dinner

“A European” Gone Girl.”" –”The Wall Street Journal ” An internationally bestselling phenomenon: the darkly suspenseful, highly controversial tale of two families struggling to make the hardest decision of their lives–all over the course of one meal. It’s a summer’s evening in Amsterdam, and two couples meet at a fashionable restaurant for dinner. Between mouthfuls of food and over the polite scrapings of cutlery, the conversation remains a gentle hum of polite discourse — the banality of work, the triviality of the holidays. But behind the empty words, terrible things need to be said, and with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened. Each couple has a fifteen-year-old son. The two boys are united by their accountability for a single horrific act; an act that has triggered a police investigation and shattered the comfortable, insulated worlds of their families. As the dinner reaches its culinary climax, the conversation finally touches on their children. As civility and friendship disintegrate, each couple show just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love. Tautly written, incredibly gripping, and told by an unforgettable narrator, “The Dinner” promises to be the topic of countless dinner party debates. Skewering everything from parenting values to pretentious menus to political convictions, this novel reveals the dark side of genteel society and asks what each of us would do in the face of unimaginable tragedy. States Lead On Minimum Wage. Is Congress Listening?

Ed. note: This is cross-posted on the U.S. Department of Labor Blog. See the original post here.

Congress is back in session this week, and if members have been listening to their constituents they will move quickly to raise the federal minimum wage, which has lost 20 percent of its purchasing power since the 1980s. But absent action from Capitol Hill, states are taking up the slack.

In March, President Obama and I visited Central Connecticut State University with four New England governors who are leading the charge to reward hard work with a fair wage. Three weeks after our visit, Gov. Dannel Malloy of Connecticut signed a bill raising Connecticut’s minimum wage. And in the last month alone, Govs. Peter Shumlin of Vermont, Deval Patrick of Massachusetts and − as recently as last Wednesday − Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island have followed suit.

What Death Taught Me About Life: 5 Inspirational Lessons

2014-07-06-images1.jpeg

It was 3 a.m. when I opened my eyes and felt like my body had been hit by a Mack truck. I was in the guest bedroom of my parents’ home in Ohio. As I became conscious, I recalled the previous day’s unseemly events — selecting a casket, shopping for a black suit for my mother, and a surreal slew of other revolting tasks my sister and I completed with robotic formality as silent screams reverberated through my 28-year-old mind. Then I remembered — my father had died following a routine surgery.

My body ached with sadness from head to toe as I got up to go to my father’s moonlit den. I picked up a paper and pen with my hands, leadened with grief, and began to write his eulogy. Tears streamed down my face as the words flowed out of my heart and through the pen until the paper was filled. I wrote the eulogy from beginning to end without changing a word. In retrospect, I believe this is because in my grief-stricken state, I was stripped down to my most vulnerable and authentic self. The message I wanted to deliver was easily accessed from my soul and downloaded to the paper.

At the funeral, I heard the click clack of my heals on the stone floor as I walked alone to the altar and up to the podium, relieved I was standing when I feared I would crumble. As I recited the eulogy, I heard a somber strength in the timbre of my voice as I looked into the mass of saddened faces. When I finished, I returned to my seat, where my husband hugged me and my mother and three siblings thanked me through matching sets of blue-gray eyes, all overflowing with tears.

“Beautiful, Joyce,” I recall the priest saying after taking a long pause. He noted that while my father had achieved a Harvard MBA and an impressive career as a corporate executive, I had mentioned none of that. The things I had mentioned included things about who he was as a man and as a father — things that mattered to me. For example:

*My father was masterful at packing the trunk of our car for our annual family vacation to Cape Code. He meticulously arranged the luggage for all six of us, ensuring there still was room for the board games and the volleyball for us to play with together.

*My dad told me I could be whatever I wanted to be. He asked me often if I was happy, because that was important to him.

*He almost always said yes to playing cards with his children or grandchildren (we had to put up with his corny jokes and bad puns, but he would play…)

Those who knew him best thanked me for capturing his essence. Others thanked me for reminding them of what is important and inspiring them to be better. For me, the eulogy experience was a critical beginning to my grief process — one that continues to ebb and flow, in different ways, many moons later.

Since then, I have lost others whom I have loved deeply.

Most paramountly, my mother passed away when I was 36. She had a brain tumor and died seven weeks after diagnosis. My children were small, and I watched her deteriorate from living a full life as an involved grandmother to unable to walk or speak, to death, all in under two months. I experienced complicated grief for months, if not more than a year, after hear death.

A year ago, I lost my dear friend, Carrie, to breast cancer. It was powerfully heartbreaking and high honor to be part of a circle of women whom she entrusted to process her feelings about her impending death and to establish a plan to support her husband and kids following her passing. (I was asked to give her daughter advice about love and relationships.)

Most regrettably, I’ve also supported friends who have endured unimaginable losses: one who buried an infant and one who buried an adult child. There are no words.

Through my personal experiences of love and loss, and through 20 years of counseling countless clients through theirs, I have learned the following truths:

1) Life is truly a gift. We’re probably all guilty at times of viewing time as an obstacle we need to hunker down and get through (e.g., “Isn’t it the end of the workday yet?” “I just need to get through this year…”) Death reminds us that life is precious, temporary and not to be taken for granted or begrudged. A daily practice of gratitude such as a meditation, affirmation or journal entry is a great way to stay positive and aligned with the awareness of the awesome gift of life.

2) You are not your resume. While our academic and career accomplishments bring knowledge and experiences, it is our choices that define our character and bring wisdom. When somebody one day gives your eulogy, it is doubtful your GPA or workplace title will be cited. What will be remembered is how you made people feel, so be mindful of being present in your relationships and be your best self.

3) The present moment is where life occurs. We all ruminate about the past and worry about the future. Death reminds us that all we have for certain is right now and re-calibrates our values. Don’t waste your life second guessing your past or waiting to live your life. Live life passionately and fearlessly. Live today and every day to its fullest, brilliant magnificence. Laugh with abandon. (Even in the last weeks of my mother’s life, my sisters and I experienced moments with her where we were overcome by fits of hysterical laughter together. I’m grateful we seized those precious opportunities for connection and hold those memories close to my heart.)

4) Loss can bring unexpected and enormous blessings. Hardships are opportunities for growth. Unimaginable losses are openings for the soul to receive healing love from new sources. In my practice and in my own journey, I have been awed and inspired by the resiliency of the human spirit. You never know how strong you are until you endure the unendurable. While it may be impossible to understand our losses, I believe all people come in our lives for a reason, setting our lives on the correct trajectory for our psycho-spiritual development. Notice the blessings you have received from your losses and be grateful for the ways those experiences have carved wisdom and depth into your being.

5) Love is the currency of life. In our culture, we place far too much value on achievement, money, possessions and beauty. Love is what matters and what is remembered. It is LOVE that connects us to one another and to the world around us, in life and beyond.

“FORGIVE quickly,

KISS slowly,

LOVE truly,

LAUGH uncontrollably.”

– James Dean

The Human Brain Has An On-Off Switch For Consciousness, Scientists Say

Turning off the mind could be as easy as flicking a switch.

That’s what doctors at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., inadvertently discovered while evaluating a 54-year-old woman with epilepsy. The researchers realized that by using electrodes to deliver tiny jolts of electricity to a particular region of the woman’s brain, they could control her consciousness almost as if they had an on-off switch.

While neurologists have in the past used electrodes to evaluate the function of various brain regions, this was the first time such a reaction had been observed.

Dr. Mohamad Koubeissi and his team observed the phenomenon while mapping electrodes implanted in the woman’s brain as part of an attempt to determine the origin of her seizures. They activated the electrodes one by one, sending a pulse of electricity to various brain areas. When they stimulated a sheet-like area of neurons called the claustrum, Koubeissi noticed something odd: rather than responding to commands, the woman was just staring blankly into space.

“The patient had a complete arrest of volitional behavior,” Koubeissi told The Huffington Post, adding that when they stopped stimulating the region, “she had absolutely no idea what had happened.”

To confirm that the patient had indeed lost consciousness rather than just temporarily losing her ability to talk and move, the team asked the patient to repeat a word and snap her fingers before the stimulation began. Each time the electrode was turned on, the team observed the same result — the woman slowly lost consciousness and became unable to recall what had just happened.

“Whatever we stimulated is a key component in the networks that constitute consciousness,” Koubeissi told HuffPost Science.

Koubeissi said he’d like to do more research on this brain region but acknowledged that that’s difficult to do because implanting electrodes into the brain solely for the purpose of research is out of the question unless a specific clinical trial has been approved.

Koubeissi said he hoped to do similar studies on other patients with epilepsy who have electrodes implanted near the claustrum. In the meantime, he’s using the knowledge he’s gained from the case study to investigate whether stimulation of the claustrum, or a neighboring region, reduces seizures in animals.

The research was published online and is scheduled for publication in the August 2014 issue of Epilepsy & Behavior.

Sunday Roundup

Happy 4th of July weekend! The week leading up to the holiday gave us much to celebrate — and much not to celebrate. We can certainly rejoice that Hurricane Arthur failed to do much damage before weakening and heading out to sea. But there can only be consternation at the Supreme Court’s decision to allow some corporations to withhold birth control coverage — damage reports to follow in the years to come. We can also celebrate that the latest jobs numbers showed the economy added 288,000 jobs in June. Far less worthy of fireworks is the fact that wage growth still lags in this unequal recovery. And though there were ugly anti-immigration protests in Southern California, we can celebrate that most Americans realize it’s our shared history as a nation of immigrants that defines us.

Ramadan Reflection Day 7: Prayers for the People of Burma’s Concentration Camps

Imam Khalid Latif is blogging his reflections during the month of Ramadan for the fourth year in a row, featured daily on HuffPost Religion. For a complete record of his previous posts, visit his author page, and to follow along with the rest of his reflections, sign up for an author email alert above, visit his Facebook page or follow him on Twitter.

I work as a University Chaplain for New York University and Executive Director of its Islamic Center. Throughout the month of Ramadan, we host iftar dinners for people to break their fasts every week night that are open to the community. We usually get between 200 and 300 people on average. A couple of hours before iftar time, a team of volunteers helps ensure that everything runs smoothly from start to finish. They pour water into cups, cut fresh fruits and vegetables, pass out dates, serve food to all the guests, and at times even forgo meals for themselves so that people will have more to eat. They are an amazing group that I am so grateful for.

One of our regular volunteers this year is a woman named Rahmat. She started coming to the IC this year and early on had asked if her mother could help volunteer as well. Her mother doesn’t speak English and Rahmat was concerned this might be problem, but we assured her it would be fine.

The other day prior to iftar, I was told that Rahmat wanted to speak with me and she gave me the unfortunate news that her father had passed away unexpectedly. His name was Mohammed Amin and she wanted to know if I could say a special prayer for him and ask the community to pray for him as well. She said she was trying so hard to bring him to live with her and first wanted to bring her mother given the situation there. I inquired, “Where?” She replied through tears, “Burma.”

The Rohingya, Ethnic Burmese Muslims, are one of the most persecuted minority groups in the world today. Riots and mob violence carried out by the Buddhist majority have been a regular occurrence, homes and stores looted and destroyed, lives lost, and much suffering sustained. Rahmat discussed some of what she had seen and her only family and friends experienced in Burma. She brought up the Qur’an and how many Muslim communities around the world will bring a haafiz, someone who has memorized the Qur’an in its entirety, to lead them in prayer each night in hopes of completing a reading of the entire scripture before the month’s end. She said in her local community, there were 14 people who had memorized the Qur’an and 12 of them had been burned alive. The pain and persecution in her voice was overshadowed only by a hopelessness of being forgotten. Her people’s conflict is not really paid attention to on a global stage, despite the severity and longevity of it.

I wonder at times why we are more prone to being informed of certain conflicts rather than all conflicts. On a governmental level, the common conclusion would be that intervention only takes place where our own interests are served. I would agree with that and pray that the world gives birth to leaders whose primary concern is the welfare of people rather than simply those of the elite. But my wonder here is more so around an absence of voices and understanding of people in general. Aside from the fact that most of us probably don’t know where Burma is on a map, how come it doesn’t find a place in our hearts? The question is not meant to inculcate guilt, but reflection. Do we just not know or is that we don’t care to know?

Nicholas Kristof gives a look into what he calls “21st Century Concentration Camps” in a video op-ed for the NY Times in which he shows the harsh conditions Muslims in Burma are forced to live in by the government. “These people are completely shut off from the entire world.” When he visits a state spokesman to speak about what he has seen, he is told, “The first thing I want to say is when you are in our state, don’t use the word Rohingya. There is no such thing as the Rohingya Ethnicity in our country.”

There are actually more than 800,000 Rohingya in his country and of them, close to 149,000 have become internally displaced in their home country since 2012. For those who have never experienced “internal-displacement” it’s important to really understand was it means. IDP populations are essentially evicted from their homes by force in mass number. Cities within their own country will not welcome them in and they are forced to live in unsettled lands on their own. I have personally visited internally displaced populations in Sri Lanka made up of Muslims that were evicted from their homes on two separate occasions by the Tamil Tigers while they were in power. These people, similar to the Rohingya, are without infrastructure of any kind. They have little to no food, virtually no medicine that resulted in children dying of illnesses that could easily be cured with simple vaccinations, no sewage systems, no places for real education, and much more.

Rahmat’s request of me was to pray for her father, Mohammed Amin, and for her people, the Rohingya. Whatever walk of life you come from, please do keep them in your thoughts and prayers. For those who are fasting, encourage your community leaders, imams, khateebs and others to pray for the Rohingya with the community at large, especially in the blessed nights of Ramadan, and try to contribute to them whatever you are able to.

Hillary Clinton Describes How She Unplugged After State Department Job

Hillary Clinton sat down for an interview with The Guardian on Friday, and revealed how she reenergized herself after logging nearly 1 million miles across the globe as the nation’s top diplomat — a relentless pace to which she would undoubtedly return, should she decide to run for president in 2016.

Arianna Huffington, editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post, asked the former secretary of state in a video appearance how she got “untired” from public service and whether she had lessons for women about managing overwork.

In her response, Clinton described vacationing in New York and noted that she “had the most enjoyable and restful time, by my standards.”

Tan, rested, and ready, as the saying goes, but for what? Her current venture is a book tour marked by a breakneck schedule and blistering pace has led some to suggest Clinton is testing the field — and herself — for a presidential run.

Full remarks from Clinton below:

Well I appreciate Arianna’s question, because she’s just written a really good book called “Thrive” in which she recounts her experience and others because we all live these 24/7 lives, working so hard, it’s an intense, stressful environment that we put ourselves in — nobody says you must go and operate at this high level, but we choose to do so. I knew that I had to get off the airplane as secretary of state, that I had been truly on the high wire of politics and diplomacy for more than 20 years, and it was time to just let down, and that’s exactly what I’ve done. I’ve had the most enjoyable and restful time, by my standards. I wouldn’t recommend it for others, but just by mine. We live in a little renovated farmhouse north of New York City, we have 3 dogs, we go for long walks, in the summertime we have a fabulous garden. It’s just been wonderful being able to breathe deeply, take yoga, learn to breathe better and all that. I thought Arianna’s admonition, really, that other women in particular, because that’s who her book is aimed at, need to just find more time to let down, to relax, to take time for yourself, and I fully endorse that.

Watch the video of Hillary and Arianna above, at the 20:00 minute mark.

Here’s How the White House Celebrates the Fourth of July:

Tomorrow's the Fourth of July, and we're pretty excited about it here at the White House.

To celebrate the holiday, the President and First Lady are inviting military heroes and their families to the White House tomorrow for a special Independence Day event, including a USO program featuring Grammy award-winning recording artist Pitbull.

But you don't need to be on the South Lawn to enjoy the show! Check out the live-stream of all of tomorrow's events — including a naturalization ceremony for service members and civilians, remarks from the President on the South Lawn, and the fireworks on the National Mall tomorrow night — right here at WhiteHouse.gov/Fourth-of-July.

In the meantime, check out some of our favorite Fourth of July moments from the past few years:

Celebrate the Revolution — And Keep It Going

Previously published on BillMoyers.com

The Glorious Fourth is a day to let ‘er rip, be as red-white-and-blue as you like, hang out the flag, join the parade, keep an eye on the sky where those fireworks are bursting in air. Start early: pop a Sousa into the sound system, turn up the volume (not too loudly out of respect for the neighbors) and eat breakfast in march tempo. Later there’ll be hot dogs and potato salad, ball games to watch and the evening festivities on the Mall on PBS. And, if there are kids of all ages around and grown-up guests, or just the two or one of you, read aloud — or repeat from memory — the opening paragraphs of the Declaration, up to the Bill of Particulars of the King’s “usurpations and abuses.” Cherish the sound of those words — “the separate and equal station to which the laws of Nature and Nature’s God entitle us… unalienable rights…life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…consent of the governed… laying its foundations on such principles… to guarantee their safety and happiness,” that last word used in the 18th century sense of “well-being.”

But on this particular 7/4/14 don’t deny the reality that insists on breaking in. We’re being dragged back into the chaos of the Middle East. We are engaged in a “war on terror” that places security over liberty with the uncritical and tacit consent of too many people. We’re told that we’re a superpower and a superpower can never retire, even if it must become a “snooperpower.” Is that the “separate and equal station” among nations that the Declaration referred to? On this day in 1981 Ronald Reagan declared that “putting people first has always been America’s secret weapon.” Tell that to Wall Street titans, hedge fund managers, multinational CEOs and the US Chamber of Commerce for whom profits over people has become a mantra.

Here at home “We, the people” are losing that ongoing battle in all societies between wealth and commonwealth as inequality blooms, the middle class withers and the poor are still with us, their numbers growing.

How do we restore the sense that it’s still terrific to be American?

Start with that other publication of 1776, Common Sense. Yes, admire, respect, cherish the words of the Declaration. But allow yourself to be set on fire by the blunt, fiery salvos against the “royal brute of Britain” fired from the pen of Tom Paine. It’s not just because he was such a tremendous journalist and propagandist, who spoke the language of the ordinary folks from whom he himself came. No, not just that. It’s because Paine understood and gave voice to the essential and potential  radicalism of the American Revolution.” We have it in our power,” he said, “to begin the world anew!!” America’s was the first large-scale application of the idea of revolution. Resist the seductive idea of some historians that the Constitution was first and foremost a kind of conservative reaction to the free-swinging proclamation of human rights in the Declaration, that it made rules, set boundaries, protected contracts and property rights (including property in Negro slaves) and deliberately made the Senate a conservative assembly, serving longer terms and not elected directly by the people.

All true, but the Constitution set no religious or property qualifications for any Federal office, gave the power of the purse to the chamber elected directly by the people of the states, guaranteed to them a “republican form of government,” abolished hereditary aristocracy, proclaimed in its Preamble (conveniently ignored by the political and financial powers-that-be) that it was “We, the People” who ordained and established the Union, in order, among other aspirations,  to “promote the general welfare.” That was new and dazzling in 1787 and it began to clear the ground for beginning the world anew, setting the pace for democratic revolutions that burst into being around the globe, and pushing Americans themselves to keep  expanding the zone of freedom.

Think on these and of Paine’s sparkplug role. Then summon his spirit to remind yourself that we can, if we really care, pick up the broken thread of democratic zeal. We are not a people content with a yellow stripe down our backs. We know the difference between compromise and surrender of ideals. We are not of a nature to be contented with “the lesser of two evils.”

So on Friday supplement your reading of the Declaration of Independence with a passage or two chosen from Common Sense or Paine’s later work to rally the weary Continental armies, The Crisis. You might like to visit your local library, take out a copy and do likewise on our nation’s 238th birthday. And start fighting back!

How?

Recognize that for all of us, these, too, are the times that try our souls. Be peacefully but persistently aggressive. Demand of your representatives at national, state and local levels: either they deliver their votes to break the Money Power or they don’t get yours. Nothing less will get their attention. This weekend and in the coming elections they will be showing up in person; find out when they will be where you live and turn up to challenge them. Don’t wait for some far-off organization to send you a petition. Get off the couch and picket their home offices. If you are ignored, or they protest that your defection will lead to their defeat, remind them of the advice of General Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox of Revolutionary fame: “We fight, get beat, rise and fight again.” That’s why the Constitution provides for frequent elections, new chances to turn opinion in your favor. And that’s why it ensures your right to be as demonstrative as it takes to be heard. Don’t leave it to others. Be as immovable on your side as the Tea Party is on theirs and don’t shrink when the corporate media and partisans on the cable channels and talk radio equate you with them as “extremists” and sing their love songs to “centrism.”

Write to the editors of your newspapers or what is left of them, go see them, call on the heads of the networks and tell them to fire their carnival barkers for the one tenth of one percent who have bought our government, or at the very least open their pages and their mikes and cameras to genuine debate with bona fide reformers and radicals of many stripes.

Make your first absolute demand an amendment to strip corporations of their personhood, nothing less. The Supreme Court isn’t sacrosanct either; Congress can change its size and the scope of its jurisdiction. Remind your representatives and senators that Citizens United can be reversed.

And watch those state legislatures, where revolutions — of right or left — can get started. Make so-called “off year” elections meaningful; get to know your state legislators, follow the example of North Carolina’s “Moral Monday” protestors, demand of your local news outlets more news of what’s being done in your name in the state capitals. Declare your opposition to legislators in bed with ALEC, Big Money’s spin machine and treasury that’s enacting the legal agenda of corporate control of our economy and our lives, one law at a time.

Take direct action: it’s your right. Boycott restaurants that won’t pay minimum wages to their staffs the way the black citizens of Montgomery boycotted their segregated buses and won. Eat at home and put the money you save into the campaigns of candidates who take no corporate money and will vote for public financing of elections. Don’t wait for new parties to form, for organizations to draft platforms. Deny your dollars to food industry conglomerates that push sweet and fattening drinks on your kids. Make the Almighty Dollar your weapon instead of theirs.

Be as passionate and involved as those populists of the First Gilded Age who wrested hymns from their original context and gathered to sing battle songs against Mammon. Christianity began as a radical religion of the lower classes. Remember the Hebrew prophets of old: Jeremiah, Amos, Isaiah and their poetic and pulsing cries for social justice. Speak out in your churches and congregations of whatever faith, or in your professional and social clubs. Be willing to work with others who disagree with you on social issues but recognize that inequality is an equal-offender crime; it poisons the lives of pro-choice and anti-choice, gay and straight, black, white and brown with cold impartiality.

Parade, picket and protest wherever figures of power and authority gather to plan new devices of enrichment for the few at the expense of the many. If the police attempt to herd you into “protest zones” far from the action try the old radical but nonviolent tactic of refusing en masse and filling up the jails.

Off the wall? Too extreme? Our situation is extreme; this is no time for summer soldiers and sunshine patriots. Even a sensible billionaire like entrepreneur Nick Hanauer gets it. “The oldest and most important conflict in human societies,” he says, “is the battle over the concentration of wealth and power.” Of capitalism he writes

It can be managed either to benefit the few in the near term or the many in the long term. The work of democracies is to bend it to the latter … We should never forget that, or forget that the United States of America and its middle class made us, rather than the other way around. Or we could sit back and do nothing, enjoy our yachts. And wait for the pitchforks.

The Tea Party gets its strength from the commitment of members who see themselves as fighting an oppressive government run by social engineers. They’ve got the right idea but the wrong villains and their successes only deliver us into the hands of government owned by robber barons. What we need this Independence Day is to take aim at that “long train of abuses and usurpations” visited on us by monied interests, invoking as the Declaration tells us, our right, our duty to “throw off such government and provide new guards for [our] security and well being.”

We haven’t come this far by crawling on our knees. Stand up — and reclaim the patriot’s dream.

What Does It Take To Live In A State Of Authentic Transparency?

How honest are we with ourselves? Do we tell ourselves the truth about our experience, about what we really want and need? How we really feel? We must learn to be profoundly honest, to tell ourselves the truth instead of responding from a place of social conformity or insecurity or lack of self-awareness.

Authentic transparency is the essence of to thine own self be true. So often, we walk around lying to ourselves. We don’t do this consciously. We don’t even realize we’re doing it. We fall into patterns. We go to the party, even though we don’t want to. We agree to a dinner, or a date, with someone who makes us uncomfortable. We are aching to speak up–but we don’t. We’re afraid to be rude, or we worry that people won’t like us. Or we’ve simply gotten used to living in a constricted state. In twelve-step parlance, we do the same things over and over again, expecting different results.

Authentic transparency is not about being transparent to other people. It is, in fact, about being transparent to yourself. Consider this: If we were honest with ourselves, how much easier would life become?

During my teens I was rebelling and trying to find my sense of self outside myself–and that wasn’t working so well at all. This played itself out most dramatically in my relationship with my father. At one point, I was in New York and my dad was in London. I called to wish him Happy Father’s Day and I suddenly began to cry. I had no idea it was going to happen until it did. It was as if a dam had burst. I told my dad how sorry I was, how I would never have purposely hurt him by rebelling, by rejecting him. And after a long pause, my father gently said, “Panache, I have only ever played the role you asked me to play for you. No apology necessary.”

That was a profound moment in my evolution. I had found the courage–so suddenly that it felt like a shock–to articulate my feelings and my internal state. And my honesty, in turn, allowed my father the space to embrace me. It was a complete embrace. There wasn’t an ounce of judgment in it, or rancor, or disappointment. He understood that I’d had to go through something–let’s call it rebellion–and that it had nothing to do with him. It was a pure and simple moment.

That event led me to the realization that everyone in my life–everyone I encounter–is playing the role I need him or her to play for me. We all do this. If we have anger, you can be sure we will encounter someone who will piss us off. If we’re sad, we will come across a person who will set off our sorrow. Ultimately, what these encounters do is to provide us with opportunities to feel whatever it is that is unresolved within ourselves.

Once we allow ourselves to feel whatever may be unresolved within ourselves, we discover that these people no longer need to play their particular role in our lives. Our relationships, whatever they may be, shift absolutely. When I let go of my rebellion, my young man’s rage, my need to tear myself away from my father, he ceased to be the man who I had been rebelling against, and we were able to meet in a space of pure love. Today, that same man comes to my house at ten each morning and takes care of my twin daughters, playing with them and giving them the greatest gift of all: his attention and love.

When you are in a state of authentic transparency, it’s a huge relief. You will feel coherent and light. Even though things may be happening all around you that are chaotic or overwhelming, you will remain clear and steadfast in the midst of it all. You become congruent with your feelings–because you know them. You’re not being led around by your feelings as if you’re a dog on a leash.

Make the commitment to be honest with yourself about what you’re feeling. Fully own it. The funny part is that the very second you have this awareness, it automatically shifts your reality. You begin to see that, in becoming authentically transparent, your relationship to yourself and to everyone around you changes completely, and–I promise you–for the better.

Foster Farms Recalls Chicken Linked To Salmonella Outbreak

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California chicken producer has issued its first recall since being linked to an outbreak of an antibiotic-resistant strain of salmonella that has been making people sick for more than a year, company and federal food officials said Thursday night.

The U.S. Department of Food and Agriculture said it has found evidence directly linking Foster Farms boneless-skinless chicken breast to a case of Salmonella Heidelberg, an antibiotic-resistant strain of the disease that has sickened more than 500 people in the past 16 months and led to pressure from food safety advocates for federal action against the company. As a result, Foster Farms issued a recall for 170 different chicken products that came from its Fresno facilities in March.

The USDA said its investigators first learned of the salmonella case on June 23, and the recall was issued as soon as the direct link was confirmed. The location of the case and identity of the person were not released.

Foster Farms says the products have “use or freeze by” dates from March 21 to March 29 and have been distributed to California, Hawaii, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Utah, Oregon and Alaska.

The long list of products in the recall include drumsticks, thighs, chicken tenders and livers. Most are sold with the Foster Farms label but some have the labels FoodMaxx, Kroger, Safeway, Savemart, Valbest and Sunland. No fresh products currently in grocery stores are involved.

The USDA said it was working with the company to determine the total amount of chicken affected by the recall.

The company emphasized that the recall was based on a single case and a single product but the broad recall is being issued in an abundance of caution.

“Our first concern is always the health and safety of the people who enjoy our products, and we stand committed to doing our part to enhance the safety of our nation’s food supply,” Foster Farms said in a statement.

The federal Centers for Disease Control says 574 people from 27 states and Puerto Rico have been sickened since the outbreak began in 2013, leading to increasing pressure from food safety advocates for a recall or even an outright shutdown of Foster Farms facilities.

Bill Marler, a Seattle attorney who specializes in class-action food-safety lawsuits, commended both Foster Farms and the USDA for “doing the right thing for food safety.”

“Recalling product is both embarrassing and hard, but is the right thing to do for your customers,” Marler said.

The company was linked to previous salmonella illnesses in 2004 and in 2012.

Recalls of poultry contaminated with salmonella are tricky because the law allows raw chicken to have a certain amount of salmonella — a rule that consumer advocates have long lobbied to change. Because salmonella is so prevalent in poultry and is killed if consumers cook it properly, the government has not declared it to be an “adulterant,” or illegal, in meat, as is E. coli.

In a letter from USDA to Foster Farms last October, the department said inspectors had documented “fecal material on carcasses” along with “poor sanitary dressing practices, insanitary food contact surfaces, insanitary nonfood contact surfaces and direct product contamination.”

Foster Farms said in May that it had put new measures in place, including tighter screening of birds, improved safety on the farms where the birds are raised and better sanitation in its plants.
