Weekly Address: America’s Resurgence Is Real

In this week’s address, the President reflected on the significant progress made by this country in 2014, and in the nearly six years since he took office.

This past year has been the strongest for job growth since the 1990s, contributing to the nearly 11 million jobs added by our businesses over a 57-month streak. America is leading the rest of the world, in containing the spread of Ebola, degrading and ultimately destroying ISIL, and addressing the threat posed by climate change. And earlier this week, the President announced the most significant changes to our policy towards Cuba in over 50 years.

America’s resurgence is real, and the President expressed his commitment to working with Congress in the coming year to make sure Americans feel the benefits.

NYC Police Union Chief Blames Mayor, Protesters For Police Killings

After the murder of two NYPD officers on Saturday, the outspoken head of the city’s primary police union blamed protesters and Mayor Bill de Blasio for the deaths of Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos.

“There’s blood on many hands tonight,” NYC Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association president Pat Lynch said Saturday night, ratcheting up already frigid tensions between City Hall and One Police Plaza.

Lynch blamed those who “incited violence on the street under the guise of protest,” — a reference to the swell of demonstrations in New York City and across the U.S. in the wake of a grand jury decision to not indict a New York police officer for killing an unarmed black man, Eric Garner, earlier this fall.

Lynch then went after Mayor de Blasio: “That blood on the hands starts on the steps of City Hall, in the office of the mayor.” He went on to praise the fallen officers, and said that those responsible for the killing will be held responsible. (Video above.)

Officers Liu and Ramos were shot dead “execution style” while in their patrol car on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn. Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, ambushed the officers, ran away to a nearby subway station, then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

The PBA has been highly critical of the mayor’s stance on police tactics and his support forprotests about police brutality. The union has also asked its members to ban the mayor from attending officer’s funerals.

Saturday night, the rank and file joined in when police officers deliberately turned their backs on de Blasio as he walked past after visiting with Liu and Ramos’ grieving families.

15 Damaging Myths About Life We Should All Stop Believing

1. There is a single definition of success.

And it involves an established career, large house, acceptable body shape, marriage and annual holidays.

Everyone has their own path to walk in this life, and what brings true meaning and deep fulfillment differs for all of us.

Let go of your need to fit to the status quo. Live, work, date, play, create, travel, eat, drink, move, laugh and sing in ways that feel right with your soul. That is true success.

2. Life is meant to be hard work.

Life is meant to be easy, beautiful and overflowing with moments of joy and bliss.

The more you listen to your soul and build a life that’s true to you, the more your actions will feel completely natural and effortless.

If life is a constant struggle, you’re running on empty and you dread Mondays, it’s time to take an honest look at your life — in a loving way.

3. Life happens to us.

Where you are now is a result of the choices you made in the past. Where you will be in the future is a result of the choices you are making right now.

You are an active participant in the creation of your life. So embrace your power as a creator, and start choosing thoughts, words and actions that make a positive impact and will come back to you in a million magnificent, beautiful, jaw-dropping ways.

4. There is such a thing as normal, and we should measure ourselves against it.

There is no such thing as a normal human, but there is such a thing as a “normal” you — where you’re completely yourself, you love yourself deeply and you think and act in ways that feel aligned with your soul.

Let your internal compass be your only point of reference.

5. There is an “us” and a “them.”

We draw a line around our social and family circles, keeping out everyone who doesn’t fit neatly within our definition of normal, interesting or worthwhile.

While everyone has vastly different aptitudes, passions and quirks, everyone also has the same light within them. The light within you is the same light within me, within the stranger on the bus, and within anyone you consider your enemy.

6. We have to compete for limited resources.

Life is meant to be abundant and limitless. We create scarcity by believing in it, instead of focusing our efforts on creating, giving and contributing our gift to help humankind reach its highest potential.

Relax and feel it deep within your heart that you will always be provided for.

7. Happiness comes from external things.

We pin our happiness on external things like our appearance, bank balance, job title, travel plans, possessions and the opinions of others — and then suffer as a result.

True, sustainable happiness comes from within — by cultivating a mindset based on gratitude, mindfulness and acceptance.

8. Holding grudges is a natural part of life.

When we feel that someone has “wronged” us, we cling to the memory and carry it around with us for weeks or sometimes years. What we fail to realize is that we are holding ourselves hostage, not just the perceived wrong-doer.

The Buddha once said, “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.

Make forgiveness your new motto and see how much freer and lighter your soul feels.

9. There is something wrong with us.

We are plagued by feelings of inadequateness and worthlessness, postponing self-acceptance and self-love until a day in the future when we’re thinner, wealthier, more confident and more popular.

You are perfect and complete exactly as you are. Even when you are striving to improve and grow, you are complete. As the Buddhist saying goes, “We are all perfect as we are, and we could all use a little work.”

10. It matters what other people think of us.

We give away so much of our energy, power and inner peace by worrying about what others think of us.

The truth is we can’t ever know for certain what other people are thinking about us. So when your ego starts to fill you with doubt and fear, remember it’s a fictional story.

11. We see things how they really are.

How we experience the world is heavily influenced by our beliefs and past experiences.

Our subconscious mind chooses pieces of information to serve to our conscious mind based on what we’ve programmed it to look for. Identify your dominant beliefs and replace the ones that aren’t serving you.

12. Meditation is something people do on a cushion at sunrise.

You can meditate and be mindful all throughout the day as you go about your life.

Pause and feel the weight of your body in your seat, the feeling of the fabric against your skin, and the slight sensation of the air on your face.

Take a few deep breaths and let your whole being relax. Scan your body up and down for sensations, simply observing, without making any judgments.

13. When we give something, we lose something.

Giving and receiving are one in truth. When you give to someone with no strings attached — whether it be a physical gift, a compliment or your time — you are nourished as well as the receiver.

Not only do you experience sensations of satisfaction and joy, but your karma will bring more blessings and gifts back into your life.

14. We have to logically figure everything out.

We’ve been taught to trust our minds but not our intuition or inner voice of guidance.

When you’re grappling with a problem or lacking clarity, learn to lean into your soul and trust the wisdom it provides to you — often in the form of a gut feeling, serendipitous sign or a spontaneous “aha!” moment.

15. We need to be more realistic.

Many people think that daily happiness and joy is an unrealistic goal, and we should be more realistic.

Happiness is THE ultimate goal of our lives, and it is both worthwhile and attainable.

Understand your purpose is to blossom into the highest, happiest version of you and let go of any guilt you feel for making your happiness a priority.

The 10-Second Trick That Can Help You Lose Weight

There are plenty of arguments that advocate throwing away the bathroom scale, but a new study suggests daily weigh-ins may be a key component to weight loss.

The study, published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE and conducted by Elina Helander and co-authors from Tampere Univeristy of Technology in Finland, sampled 2,838 weight observations from 40 people attending a health program and found that when people weighed themselves daily they tended to lose weight, while taking breaks from daily weigh-ins for longer than one month led to weight gain in certain cases.

This isn’t the first time the odds have been in favor of the bathroom scale.

“Get out of bed, use the bathroom, then step on the scale. Every day,” personal trainer Marshall Roy advised in an article for Be Well Philly earlier this year. “It will give you a very reliable baseline and daily data point. It will fluctuate a little bit day to day, but when you look at all the numbers over the course of a week or month, trends will be obvious.”

And a University of Minnesota study, cited by Prevention magazine, surveyed 1,800 dieting adults and found that people who weighed themselves every day lost about 12 pounds over the course of two years, while people who weighed themselves every week lost only 6 pounds.

So if weight loss is one of your New Year’s resolutions, be advised: The scale may be a better friend than you thought.

My 2014 ‘McLaughlin Awards’ [Part 1]

Welcome everyone to our year-end awards columns!

As we do every year, we are pre-empting our “Friday Talking Points” columns for the next two weeks, to bring you our best and worst of 2014. And, yes, we are going to continue our supercilious and no-doubt-annoying habit of using the editorial “we” throughout these two columns, so thanks for asking! Heh.

As always, we are using a slightly-modified version of a category list created by the The McLaughlin Group for their own year-end shows, as an homage (which sounds ever so much better than saying we’re just ripping off McLaughlin’s categories… ahem).

This will be a very long column (just to warn everyone) with lots of short little awards explanations, so let’s get right to it. Feel free to disagree with any or all of these picks in the comments, as usual, and propose your own winners for everyone’s consideration. I will admit that there is a sort of running theme to this year’s awards, due to one issue that remained in the background for most Americans but on which such significant political progress was made this year that it deserved multiple awards. Enough of a teaser for you to read all the way through to Person Of The Year? We certainly hope so.

Trophy
   Biggest Winner Of 2014

Loath as we are to admit it, there was no single Biggest Winner Of 2014, because the award must be handed, collectively, to the Republican Party. A case could be made for Mitch McConnell, since he will win the biggest prize of any Republican next year: control of the United States Senate. But this would leave out other Republican victories, such as holding more House of Representative seats than at any time since Herbert Hoover was president, or their increase in control of governors’ offices and state legislatures.

The GOP won big this November. Really big. So big that this award was one of the easiest to call. The Biggest Winner Of 2014 was the entire Republican Party.

Trophy
   Biggest Loser Of 2014

Hmm… let’s see… Scottish independence?

Kidding aside, you’d think this would also be an easy one to pick. The converse award should go to the Democratic Party, for their ineffectual campaign about nothing. Or perhaps Harry Reid, for losing the Senate.

But we’re going to tack in a different direction, and give the Biggest Loser award to the Tea Party, for the second year running. The Tea Party lost almost every important primary challenge (with the notable exception of Eric Cantor’s takedown), and they lost a huge amount of power within the corridors of Capitol Hill as well. Oh, sure, folks like Ted Cruz still get lots of camera time bloviating about this or that, but when the votes are counted, the Tea Party has lost significant support from within the Republican ranks. For instance, although there was a raise in the debt ceiling and extensions of the federal budget this year, there was no government shutdown. That right there is a measure of their waning support within Congress.

There was even a period this year, during primary season, when the conventional Washington wisdom (an oxymoron if ever there was one) was that the Tea Party was over and done with. This was nonsense, of course. The Tea Party will be around in some form or another for years to come, but it is impossible to ignore how much real power they lost this year. Making them the Biggest Losers Of 2014. The Tea Party’s highest point will likely be measured as the shutdown last October — since then, it’s all been downhill.

Trophy
   Best Politician

Again, it brings us no personal pleasure, but we have to give Best Politician to Mitch McConnell. Mitch was in big trouble heading into this election. His approval ratings were in the toilet in Kentucky, and he faced a Tea Party primary challenge and then a formidable Democrat in the general. He did what politicians often do in such situations — he raised a mountain of cash. He used this war chest to win the nomination handily, and then chalk up a comfortable margin in the general election.

McConnell has led his fellow Senate Republicans on a very risky path, that of delaying and obstructing Harry Reid at levels never before seen in all of American history. Back in the day, a few bills per year would be filibustered. Under McConnell, pretty much every bill was subjected to a 60-vote minimum. And — the important reason why McConnell wins this award — he paid no real political price for doing so. Other than the backlash against last year’s government shutdown, Republicans were able to raise the obstructionism level to sky-high limits, and the public largely never noticed.

McConnell will have a tough job ahead of him trying to get anything done, especially considering the fact that at least three members of his Republican Senate caucus are gearing up to run for president — and will thus have no interest in “toning things down” or “getting things done.” We’ll see how good a politician he really is in the next two years, but for 2014 he was indeed the Best Politician.

Trophy
   Worst Politician

This is a tough one, because there are so many to choose from. Sigh.

On the Republican side, there was Monica Wehby and Terry Lynn Land, who ran for the Senate from Oregon and Michigan, respectively. Both were hailed early on as candidates with excellent chances for stealing seats away from Democrats. Both ran disastrous campaigns, and lost — in a big Republican year, no less. On the Democratic side, we had Bruce Braley, who blew an easily-winnable Senate race in Iowa with one bad comment disparaging farmers.

On the crazy side, we had all sorts of wackadoodles. Edwin “live boy or dead girl” Edwards thought the time was ripe for his comeback (he was wrong). Erick Wright, who put a campaign video out of himself sitting on the toilet expounding on politics (“Politics on the Throne”), or maybe the Tea Party candidate in Kansas who had a disgraceful hobby of posting X-rays of gunshot victims online with witty comments about how they died.

We almost handed this award to Darrell Issa, because he had a purely political job — uncover a juicy scandal (ANY scandal!) in the Obama administration — and he failed at it so spectacularly. He held hearing after hearing, but never got anywhere close to a “smoking gun” in any of his trumped-up scandals. That’s a pretty bad record, measured purely on politics.

But we’re going to give the award to Scott Brown, the peripatetic Senate candidate who has now lost in two New England states (watch out, Connecticut — you may be next!). Carpetbaggers are not exactly welcome in New Hampshire, especially those arriving from Massachusetts. They even have a word for such folks, and it begins with “Mass” and ends with “holes,” but we are too polite to repeat such slurs here, of course. Ahem.

Scott lost the only Senate seat that Republicans really should have picked up this year — in a GOP wave election, his loss was pretty much the only sour note on Election Night for Republicans. Not only did Scott occasionally forget what state he was running in (whoops!), he also seemed confused about one of New Hampshire’s counties at a very late date in the race. Now, this might be understandable in, say, Iowa, with its 99 counties — but New Hampshire only has a total of ten counties. Ten! That’s it. And Scott Brown had trouble remembering one of them.

For his entire performance during the campaign, and for giving Democrats their only bright spot in the 2014 midterms, Scott Brown was 2014′s Worst Politician.

Trophy
   Most Defining Political Moment

Well, the moment that was not the most defining was probably when Democrats rolled out their “Middle Class Jumpstart” campaign theme, and then went precisely nowhere with it.

When looking back historically, President Obama’s opening up Cuba may very well be the moment that is remembered. But somehow it seems to fresh right now to call it “most defining” for the whole year.

Either “Hands Up Don’t Shoot” or “I Can’t Breathe” may also well be seen later as the most defining moment, but that would only become reality if things actually changed as a result of all the protesting — which is a longshot at best, sad to say.

For the time being, the Most Defining Political Moment of 2014 has to be none other than the midterm elections. The shift in power is going to redefine Washington for the next two years in a big way, making it by definition the “most defining.”

Trophy
   Turncoat Of The Year

This is an interesting category, because you can see it in a positive light or a negative one. Positively, you could give it to (for instance) the New York Times for their stunning reversal of editorial policy on legalizing marijuana. They not only charted a new course, they backed it up with both an extensive series explaining every aspect of their decision and their endorsement of pro-marijuana ballot measures in the midterm election.

On the negative side, consider Leon Panetta’s book. A great example of the “I was right, everybody else including Obama was wrong” style of literature (which is always popular in Washington).

But we’re going positive this year, and handing the Turncoat of the Year award to Chad Taylor, who briefly ran as a Democrat for the Senate seat from Kansas. The “briefly” refers to why Taylor won this award. Pat Roberts was looking vulnerable in Kansas during the campaign, but the problem was the opposition to him was split between the Democrat, Taylor, and independent candidate Greg Orman. So Taylor bowed out of the race, to give Orman a better shot at taking Roberts’s seat. Such acts of selflessness are incredibly rare in politics — so rare as to almost be non-existent, in fact. It even led to an amusing period when the Republicans were suing to keep a Democrat on the ballot who didn’t want to run, which ultimately failed.

Unfortunately, Orman also ultimately failed. Pat Roberts will return to the Senate. But Orman had a much better shot at winning this race than he ever would have if Taylor had stayed in. For pulling out of a race to give another guy a better shot at winning, Chad Taylor is our Turncoat of the Year.

Trophy
   Most Boring

While we normally hand this one out to a person, our only candidates this year were two intangibles. We considered “Republicans running on an all-anti-Obamacare platform in the midterms,” since the change was so noticeable over the year — Republicans began 2014 proudly predicting that Obamacare would be the winning issue for them, but by the time the campaign really got going, more and more good Obamacare news stories had wiped away the potency of the issue for the GOP, and they all but stopped talking about it by October. The whole “anti-Obamacare” platform was downright boring to voters, to put it another way.

But we’re going to give this award out in a very positive way, instead. Because 2014 was the year that gay marriage became boring. Not the marriages themselves — each a wonderful expression of an individual couple’s joy — but the continuous nature of all the marriage equality political and court victories over the course of the year. Think about it — it has been only 18 months since the Supreme Court issued their landmark ruling. In that short time, news like the recent headline “Florida Grants First Gay Divorce” has become not only routine, but downright boring.

The opponents of marriage equality are so demoralized, they barely put up a fight anymore. The wiser Republicans have all but stopped talking about it. Most of the country sees it as an inevitability. The Supreme Court still has to issue one more ruling on the matter, but that is really only a question of when it will happen (not, notably, “if it will happen” or “which way the ruling will go”).

Boredom, in this instance, is not a negative quality. It is an enormous victory. Marriage equality is now almost taken for granted by most Americans. That is a stunning, monumental turnaround in outlook. So gay rights activists and everyone who supported and still supports marriage equality should wear the Most Boring award with pride. Lots of pride. Because boring, in this instance, means mainstream. And that’s what the battle has really been for, all along.

Trophy
   Most Charismatic

She doesn’t fit the category in a conventional way, but we’re going to go out on a limb and give Most Charismatic to Senator Elizabeth Warren. If anything, Warren exudes a soft and understated charisma; but to the populist left, she is nothing short of a rock star.

Warren not only continues to be the best Democrat since Bill Clinton at (as Bill puts it) “explainin’ stuff,” she also continues to gain followers among her fellow Democrats. Warren can put together a speech like no other Democrat out there right now, and it’s not really that she’s saying anything all that new (she’s basically just recommitting Democrats to traditional Democratic principles), but the way she says it cuts through all the Washingtonese and lays it out for everyone to easily understand.

Warren does have brilliant policy ideas — ones that more Democrats in the Senate should really get behind. The best example was her very first bill, which would have offered student loans at the same rock-bottom prices that the federal government gives when it lends money to big banks. What could be fairer? Investing in our country’s future versus fattening Wall Street’s pockets? A no-brainer!

At the end of the year, Harry Reid announced Warren will have a new leadership position in the Senate next year, which means she’ll be a voice at the big table for Main Street. This is precisely what the party needs right now. And my guess is that she’ll be the most-requested guest speaker during the 2016 campaign season. While Warren doesn’t have some of the raw bluster of other charismatic politicians (Chris Christie or Vladimir Putin, for instance), her quiet version of charisma is going to win over a lot of converts in the next two years.

Trophy
   Bummest Rap

This one is pretty easy. All the thousands of headlines and repetitions of a talking point that was just flat-out wrong in 2014: “Obama’s poll numbers are sinking fast!”

Obama’s job approval poll numbers were, admittedly, pretty low in 2014. Not once did he crack even 45 percent approval on the RealClearPolitics rolling daily average. That’s dangerous territory for any politician to be in, and did contribute to the Democratic losses in the midterms. Fair enough. But to say his poll numbers were “sinking” or “diving” or “cratering” or any other similar term was just wrong.

Obama started the year with a job approval rating, on the first of January, of 42.6 percent. Throughout the year this number fluctuated between a low of 40.9 percent to a high of 44.7 percent. That is a difference of only 3.8 percent — for the entire year. And these are daily numbers, which often fluctuate wildly. Not this year, though. Obama’s job approval daily rating, as I write this, is 42.0 percent — only 0.6 percent off the exact point where he started this year. His poll numbers have stayed remarkably stable all year long, in fact — rising a few points, falling a few points, but never really changing dramatically one way or the other.

Obama’s poll numbers did take a serious dive — but it happened last October. The Obamacare website disaster did hit his polling hard. And he’s never really recovered from it. His poll numbers hovered around 42 percent all year — a pretty low area to be in. All of this is true. But what is not true is that Obama’s poll numbers were “sinking” or “plummeting” at any point during the year. But that didn’t stop thousands of references from the punditocracy about “Obama’s plummeting poll numbers” — the Bummest Rap of the year.

Trophy
   Fairest Rap

Well, let’s see, there was Dinesh D’Souza pleading guilty to violating campaign finance laws.

There was also the Republicans engaging in widespread attempts to suppress votes from voters they didn’t like — that’s a pretty fair rap.

There was the sorry saga of John Walsh, who had to stop his efforts to be elected (he was initially appointed, so “re-elected” would be wrong) to the Senate in Montana, and had his diploma stripped from him by the Army War College for plagiarizing his way through a final paper. That was indeed a fair rap, and Walsh (deservedly) paid a heavy price for it.

The rap of “Democrats didn’t really run on anything” is a pretty fair one, too.

But the fairest rap of 2014 was best expressed by President Obama: “We tortured some folks.” Yes, we did. Senator Dianne Feinstein is to be commended for following through on this shameful period of American behavior, and fighting hard (even against the White House) to get the summary of her report released to the public. You can argue all you want to about the political implications of her report (and what we did), but the truth of the matter is now plain for all to see.

American tortured. It’s a fair rap. Just ask John McCain — he’ll tell you.

Trophy
   Best Comeback

There were a lot of possibilities here, most notably all those Republican politicians who won their races handily, when they were supposed to be close (Sam Brownback and Pat Roberts of Kansas, for instance, or maybe Rick Scott or Scott Walker). There was the overall comeback of the Republican Party after the disaster of shutting down the government late last year — that was pretty impressive.

We toyed with going comedic on this one, as in “best snappy comeback.” The obvious contender was John Boehner making the inevitable “boner” joke about his own last name to a reporter (the video of which has been endlessly played on late-night television).

But, in the end, we have to give Best Comeback to none other than the much-maligned HealthCare.gov website. The comeback really started last December, but it continued throughout 2014 in spectacular fashion. The bugs got fixed. The site started working. Millions signed up for health care on it. This year, when the open enrollment period began, there were no problems whatsoever, even with incredibly high traffic.

The Obamacare website will doubtlessly be taught in computer programming classes for years to come as “the best bad example of how not to do a website rollout.” Nothing can change that. But it also now may be taught in those same classes as the best example of how to quickly fix bad programming. The turnaround was spectacular, in fact. Look at the volume of media stories last October, November, and December about how broken the site was. The coverage was overwhelming. Now compare it to this year’s coverage — mostly a big yawn. No stories about how bad things were. “Everything still up and running” wasn’t newsworthy enough to cover.

That is a spectacular comeback, and indeed HealthCare.gov wins the Best Comeback of 2014.

Trophy
   Most Original Thinker

This one’s pretty easy, once you look beyond America’s shores.

Pope Francis I is the Most Original Thinker the Vatican has seen in a very long time. Francis is faced with the world’s biggest bureaucracy and the most ingrained thinking on the planet. He is going to remold the Catholic Church in a different image, by the time he’s done — of that, there can be no doubt.

The resistance he faces is daunting, from the Church’s hierarchy. Nevertheless, he is determined to force change on a very moribund institution. Being in the middle of the recent thawing of relations between the United States and Cuba was just the icing on the cake, at year’s end. Pope Francis I will hopefully continue to astonish the Catholic world for years to come, and is our easy choice for Most Original Thinker this year.

Trophy
   Most Stagnant Thinker

There were a few candidates that caught our eye here from America: Dick Cheney (for obvious reasons), the head of the Drug Enforcement Agency (also, for obvious reasons), and the big push by some Republican state legislatures to pass “Turn Away The Gays” laws, under the pretense of freedom of religion (some stagnant thinking indeed).

But, once again, we must look overseas for this award. Because Vladimir Putin was undoubtedly the Most Stagnant Thinker of the year. Even on the big world’s stage of sports and entertainment — the Sochi Winter Olympics — Putin portrayed a deep nostalgia for the Cold War and Soviet eras. After the athletes went home, Putin grabbed Crimea in a naked display of empire not seen for quite some time. His minions then shot down a commercial airliner in the Ukrainian fighting.

Putin seems bent on charting a course for Russia that leads straight back to the worst excesses of the Soviet Union. The economic sanctions and the plummeting price of oil may eventually force him to moderate his behavior, but in 2014 Putin seems an easy pick for Most Stagnant Thinker.

Trophy
   Best Photo Op

Kim Kardashian’s butt breaks the internet?

Nah, too easy.

We’re going to return to our overarching theme here, and call the best photo op for two photos of Republican politicians that never would have happened in earlier times.

The first is an amusing photograph of Representative John Mica, at a House hearing on marijuana policy. From the story:

Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.) brought a fake joint to a House oversight hearing on Friday on Washington, D.C.’s new law decriminalizing marijuana.

“I have this joint here,” Mica said. “Don’t get too excited out there, some of you, this is not a real one, it’s a mock one.”

Mica, who opposes marijuana legalization generally, says the law will allow D.C. residents to possess up to 20 joints, and he brought the fake one to make his point.

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) asked Mica whether he’d rolled it himself.

“No, I had staff do it,” Mica said in response. “They have more experience.”

Can anyone imagine this happening five or ten years ago? We certainly can’t.

Our second Best Photo Op from last year is this even-more-amusing photograph (the second one down, in the article), which shows Republican Tom Tancredo of Colorado with a documentary filmmaker who created the film Mile High: The Comeback of Cannabis (in which Tancredo is interviewed in, yes, a smoke-filled room).

Tancredo, who is normally to the right of Attila The Hun on most issues, castigates his fellow conservatives for not getting behind legalization on ideological grounds:

What really does make me feel a little bit discouraged is this, everybody talks about the importance of freedom, individual responsibility. I’m talking both left and right, because I think the left comes off just as constrictive of people’s liberty. But in this case, you’ve got people who call themselves, think of themselves as true conservatives and they want freedom for everybody except for people they don’t like or for people that do things they don’t think they should do. That is not freedom, in any way, shape or form. We may have won a political battle with legalization, but the philosophical battle continues to be waged.

Again, as Dylan might say, the times they are a-changin’. As these two Best Photo Op winners show.

Trophy
   Worst Photo Op

Kim Kardashian’s butt breaks the internet? Heh… we seem to be repeating ourselves….

All kidding aside, there are certain photos which were certainly newsworthy this year. The “I can’t breathe” video and the Islamic State beheadings videos, for instance. But it’s hard to call them “photo ops” since they weren’t staged events for political reasons.

A candidate for a local race in Fresno, California stepped in it big time while trying to use a message about urban blight against his opponent. A decent message, but somebody decided to use a “broken windows” example photo without checking where it was from — which turned out to be Auschwitz. That was pretty bad.

Right after the State Of The Union speech last year, Republican Michael Grimm threatened to throw a reporter over a balcony for daring to ask him a question — that was also pretty bad optics (although the worst part was the audio of his threats).

But the Worst Photo Op, for all kinds of reasons, was what was done by a Tea Partier’s campaign down in Mississippi. The longtime Republican senator, Thad Cochran, was challenged from the right in the primaries. It was a brutal fight, with charges of vote-buying and a sore-loser court case by the Tea Partier when he lost the primary. But just before the election, someone in the Tea Partier’s campaign decided it’d be a good idea to sneak into the care facility where Cochran’s disabled wife lives and snap a few pathetic photos of her, to use in mudslinging.

This is the dirtiest of dirty pool, folks. The lowest of the low. We’re no fans of Thad Cochran, but have to say for the sake of decency that this crossed a few major ethical lines (and legal ones). We refuse to link to the photos themselves (we think they were taken down, but we refused to even search for them on the grounds of awfulness) but even sight unseen, we can easily say this was the Worst Photo Op of the year.

Trophy
   Enough Already!

This category is a complete free-for-all, as always.

Ted Cruz — Enough already!

Turn Away The Gays laws — Enough already!

Benghazi conspiracy theories — Enough already!

The Washington (Ethnic Slurs) football team — Enough already!

Torture — Enough already!

Dick Cheney — Enough already!

Torture apologists — Enough already!

Michele Leonhart, head of the D.E.A. — Enough already!

Trophy
   Worst Lie

We had quite a few entries in this category, sadly.

First, a whole category of Republican conspiracy theory lies: “Benghazi!”

Maybe (as a corollary): “Anything that comes out of Darrell Issa’s mouth.”

Or how about: “Obamacare will kill jobs and the economy!”

PolitiFact nailed a big one: “Fearmongering by politicians and media over Ebola.”

But instead of all these, we’re going with a big lie that lasted throughout a goodly portion of the year: “Republicans are ready to pass immigration reform.” No, seriously, remember that knee-slapper?

At the beginning of the year, House Republicans were going to put forth their own immigration bills — many of them, starting with “secure the borders.” Speculation abounded (including quite a bit of my own) over when the correct window would be for John Boehner to introduce such bills (after primary filing season, after the first big primaries, after primary season ends, while the kids-at-the-border crisis was happening, maybe in the fall, etc., etc.). Obama even gave them an extra few months before he announced his own reforms. All of it for naught.

Nothing happened. No bills moved. The Republicans have been in charge of the House since 2010, they’ve been promising “any day now” that they’ll be tackling immigration reform, and they are completely incapable of doing so.

But every time Boehner stands in front of a microphone and repeats the same tired promise — we’re getting right on that, expect a vote soon — the media buys into it once again. Over and over and over. With absolutely nothing to show for it. This year was the worst, in terms of broken promises. Which makes the House Republicans “We’re going to have our own immigration bills” easily the Worst Lie of 2014.

Trophy
   Capitalist Of The Year

The Capitalist Of The Year award goes to none other than marijuana. The cannabis plant. Grass. Weed. Pot. Dope. Mary Jane. Reefer. Tetrahydrocannabinol and all its merry cannabinoid cousins.

This was the year marijuana grew up and joined the big leagues. Literally, in fact — the 2014 Super Bowl was played between two teams from states with legal recreational marijuana, the first Super Bowl Of Weed in history. How cool is that?

But it wasn’t just marijuana reform or efforts to change laws that won weed this honor. Marijuana is about to spring into being as a multi-billion dollar industry. There is currently a “Green Rush” (akin to a Gold Rush) happening, as more and more companies dive in to the peripheral markets for marijuana — growing apparatus, purity testing companies, technological advances in processing, and all the rest of it.

The federal government has placed an official order for almost three-quarters of a ton of legal weed for the next year, anticipating the rush of scientific studies which can finally actually study the substance without anti-scientific pre-conceived political agendas. This is a new thing, because to do any such studies in the past, you had to be trying to prove how evil marijuana is. Marijuana reform opponents will soon no longer be able to use the convenient “it hasn’t been rigorously tested” excuse. The state of Colorado just approved millions of dollars in state money to support such scientific analysis. In Canada, the first marijuana television ad appeared.

Washington and Colorado have a legal market for marijuana now. Oregon and Alaska will soon join them. This bell’s never going to be unrung, folks. Some fear the future, because it will indeed mean marijuana will become a gigantic industry, with all the corporate baggage that implies. There are already marijuana lobbyists on Capitol Hill, for instance. Yes, at some point the tobacco companies will likely get interested. There will be a marijuana mass market, soon. But just as there is today Pabst Blue Ribbon, there is also Dom Perignon. There will always be an elite marketplace for the best of the best, and marijuana is no different, the fearful should really calm down a bit.

Marijuana is about to become just another commodity. There really is no turning back. It’s about to become big business. In fact, it’s about to become Big Marijuana, worthy of capitalization in the same way Big Banks or the Big Three automakers are capitalized. Not only is this nothing to fear, it is also the reason why marijuana wins Capitalist Of The Year. Nothing else comes close, because the marijuana marketplace is being created from scratch — meaning the growth in this industry will be off the charts for the next few years to come.

Trophy
   Honorable Mention

This is another one of those anything-goes categories.

First and foremost (to me, at least), an Honorable Mention goes to Craig Ferguson, who helped keep me sane for the past ten years. Craig’s last show is tonight, so don’t miss it!

I’d also like to give an Honorable Mention to Betty Medsger, author of The Burglary, the best book I read all year long. This fascinating story is all but unknown, even to people who recognize such terms as COINTELPRO, the Pentagon Papers, and the Church Committee. I strongly encourage everyone to buy a copy today to put under the tree of your favorite political wonk — they’ll thank you for it later, I promise!

The retiring Democrat John Dingell deserves an Honorable Mention, for being the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives in all our history (he served 29 terms, and was first sworn in when American had only 48 states), and the longest-serving current member of Congress.

Dianne Humetewa, the first Native American woman to sit as a federal judge, deserves an Honorable Mention as well.

Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber, former emergency room doctor, who saved the life of a stranger while on his way to dinner.

Joe Biden, for sending a nice note and a red-white-and-blue corsage to a woman who asked him to be her prom date. A classy response, Joe!

The nameless guy in a Colorado bar who, in a friendly gesture, offered President Barack Obama a toke of his joint (captured on video), with the immortal words “You want a hit of this?” The amazing thing was what happened immediately afterwards — Obama laughed it off, and nothing else happened. The guy wasn’t wrestled to the ground, he wasn’t arrested by the Secret Service (they’ve certainly arrested people near presidents for less), and he wasn’t charged with any crime. That is progress, my friends.

Me (can’t resist), for coining a fun word that won’t be used for another 35 years — “selenofriggatriskaidekaphobia,” the fear of the full moon on Friday the 13th. Heh.

And, out of the hidden annals of history, Buzz Aldrin. An auction revealed a story I certainly had never heard before: Buzz Aldrin officially celebrated communion on the moon. That’s got to be worth at least an Honorable Mention at the very least, right?

Trophy
   Person Of The Year

If that Capitalist Of The Year award weren’t enough of a shock, our 2014 Person Of The Year was none other than the outgoing Attorney General, Eric Holder.

Holder wins Person Of The Year for being the point man on reversing the federal government’s disastrous War On Weed. Sure, you can argue that Holder didn’t act without approval from his boss, but President Obama has largely been content to let Holder take the lead (and the heat) for all the new marijuana policies. Since Holder took the risks, he also is entitled to the reward.

Holder has done much this year on his own to chart a new course for marijuana policy. Most notably, he allowed the Colorado and Washington experiment to proceed without heavy-handed interference by the feds. He moved to allow banks to deal with above-board marijuana businesses, he stunningly has changed sentencing policy (even retroactively applying it to current prisoners), and he has spoken out on the racial disparities evident in who gets arrested, charged, and sentenced for low-level drug crimes.

He’s got plenty of high-level support (and, no, that is not a pun). Treasury Secretary Jack Lew helped out with the banking rule changes. Five Nobel Prize winners and George Shultz signed a letter in support of ending the worldwide Drug War. Prosecutors are getting on board with the idea. Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens expressed his support. President Obama — the third American president in a row to admit smoking pot earlier in his life — admitted in an interview that smoking pot was less dangerous than drinking alcohol.

The War On Weed is crumbling. We are approaching the end game of this pointless decades-long failed experiment. When the history of legalization is finally written, though, there will be plenty of people responsible for turning points along the way. But Eric Holder will hold a special place as the pioneer who began the efforts to dismantle the federal government’s failed policies on marijuana. Yes, he could have gone further, and he could have gotten there quicker. Yes, injustices still happen on a daily basis. Yes, there are some federal prosecutors who are still way too gung-ho about marijuana prosecutions. Yes, the head of the Drug Enforcement Agency really needs to be fired. There are plenty of caveats — including the biggest: Eric Holder could reschedule marijuana on the “controlled substances” list himself, with the stroke of a pen. Even having said all of that, however, Eric Holder took the first steps on a path that has now changed from being unthinkable to being almost inevitable. For bravely doing what he managed to accomplish, Eric Holder is our Person Of The Year.

The Gift of Silence

In silence we can hear our own thoughts. Perhaps more beautiful we can hear the world without the crowded stream of our thoughts. Visiting silence can be an adventure, a pilgrimage, a life changing journey into peace and quiet. We can be quite busy and loud in our attempts to make a more peaceful world. Maybe the peace we seek is not so complicated. Maybe the quiet we want can begin with turning down the noise we routinely live with. Real peace and quiet can be no further then spending some time in silence.

Silence is more then a break from the traffic of daily life. The stillness is food for our nerves. As we rest in quiet’s gentle blanket we recover from daily stress and much more. We begin the recovery from our loss of self. In all the noise we live with, we contract. We tighten up. We lose our openness and joy. In silence, we are less on survival mode and more free to smile. Despite what many people think, silence is good company. Our separateness decreases. We feel more connected. In peace and quiet we are less alone. As we let go into the great silence, we find ourselves part of something greater. The sounds of the wind, a burning fire, rain and snow all make us feel a part of something more. With less thought, our senses become brighter. Smells, tastes, sights, and of course sounds grow stronger in silence. Our emotions, memory, and imagination are awakened. Many writers and artists begin their work by beginning in a period of silence.

Turning off our machines, unplugging from our gadgets is just the beginning of coming into silence. Silence is taking a step out of our personal story. We can breathe. Earth, planets, and stars come closer. We are reminded of a larger perspective. Those who pass through the door into much silence find themselves less interested in what others are doing or what they should be doing. Having more or less of everything is not so important. The thousand touches of silence around and within raise our curiosity, heighten our awareness, expand our being.

Silence speaks for the part of life that is beyond words, beyond description. Sitting for sometime in its sanctuary and we find a place within us that is centered, whole, a place of trust. A walk in silence with a friend or partner can do wonders in joining us together, fresh and renewed. We are much more then our complicated lives and personalities. Silence reminds us of the bonds between friends and family, the golden bonds of everything shared. We are much more then what we do together. We are the culmination of a life of activities shared and shared silence.

When we give ourselves to silence, we find an intimacy and shelter. Many people find silence as a refuge. The quiet is their private world. Here they live underneath the daily noise. The simplicity of grace visits. The silence is always new, different, inviting. There is a heart beating that is the heart of the trees, rivers, mountains, life all around and within. Silence can pick us up and carry us to incredible destinations if we allow it. And silence can be like a safe harbor where we drop anchor down underneath our desires and challenges to a place of unequaled being and presence.

Its normal for our personality to get restless in silence looking for something to do. We find our mind wandering off onto old trails of thought and feelings that habitually grab our attention. But if we try to be present,if we actively offer ourselves to silence’s touches, there is a new trail for us to explore. If we can just be and let the quiet lead, our busy mind can find a pure spot, a quiet place. Silence is all about remembering the heart including the heart of life. Mystics through out history have enjoyed the thread of silence leading them to a golden tapestry sitting in an inner temple of vast understanding and light. There is a mystic in each of us that hungers for some of this awe. Nothing else satisfies as much as these moments when we come to silence and dwell for a while.

With silence, life’s opportunities are seen differently. Our priorities begin to change. What is important and not so pressing become clearer. The heart in stillness calls us. I imagine stores and shopping centers offering gifts of silence wrapped in bright colors and boxes of all sizes. Each box includes instructions how to open and enjoy. Silence is for people of all ages, all incomes, every circumstance in life. What should be the price for these gifts of silence? This is a good question. How much is peace and quiet worth to us? Is silence just another gift to open, briefly hold before going onto something else? Or is the great quiet something to behold and sit with for a long time? Whether for body or soul, silence is patient, waiting, ready, very giving this time of year.

Two Ways to Know if You’re Going to Meet the Man You’re Going to Marry in 2015

2014-12-19-marriageEJengagedmarriagelovecouplering.jpg
As we approach the New Year, many single people who are in a serious relationship (or would like to find one) may wonder, “Will 2015 be my year to find a marriage partner and marry?”

The 7th House of your birth chart holds the answer to that question. This is the House of intimate partnerships such as marriage, where there’s a deep commitment of love between two people.

The right astrological event (known as a transit) may come into your House of Marriage and bring you a marriage partner or marriage you seek. Two of the planetary transits that may do this for you in 2015 are Jupiter and Uranus.

When is Your Lucky Time for Marriage?

Jupiter transiting the seventh House gives you the opportunity for favorable partnerships and love relationships. If you’re single and want to find a wonderful loving relationship, then you’ve received a valuable gift when Jupiter transits your 7th House. It’s an incredibly lucky time to find a partner. If you’ve just said to a friend, “When will I ever meet my prince (or princess)?” – the universe has answer for you. This could be the year!

What’s great about this time is that you are an expansive state of mind where you’re genuinely open to a relationship. You’re likely to feel sociable, generous, affectionate, loving and very capable of intimacy with others. Perhaps in the past you’ve enjoyed the excitement of being single, dating around and having fabulous romantic experiences. You now realize your happiness comes from sharing your life with another person and learning about yourself in the process. You’ll have many fortuitous opportunities to socialize and meet desirable “potential” mates for a long-term committed relationship. I remind my clients that what’s so great about Jupiter transiting the 7th House is that, unlike other times when you may have met unsuitable partners, now you’ll meet ones for the long-term who may be “marriageable.”

Don’t squander this gift by sitting at home or working your usual long day at the office. This is your year to be out in the public, networking, socializing, asking to be fixed-up, and pro-actively meeting potential mates.

If you’re already in a committed relationship, Jupiter’s transit here can provide you with positive assistance to improve your partnership and make it even better. You may discover during this year that you love and enjoy your partner even more than you did when you first married.

Will a Surprise Marriage Mate Come Into Your Life?

Uranus transiting your seventh House can suddenly and surprisingly, bring an exciting love relationship into your life. It will be much different than you’ve ever imagined. Your new relationship will allow you to escape the dull routine you may have felt from your previous relationships. There’s something exciting about the person who comes into your life.

You’ll feel it in your bones. The prospect of a new love relationship or an exciting affair will be very appealing and thrilling. Suddenly, the man who just started coming to your yoga class looks very intriguing. The exotic-looking woman who just moved into your apartment building and gave you a big smile and a warm hello seems so inviting.

Be aware that one of the manifestations of Uranus’ transit through the 7th House is that you may have a wild, unusual and unstable love affair that is often erratic and unreliable. But it’s this very quality of the relationship that you’ll find so addictive and exciting.

Just be prepared that if you do fall in love, this is a time when the romance you attract is likely to be exciting, improbable and rather free-spirited. It may very well be with someone who’s very different then you, either in ethnicity, age or background. But no matter what, you’re likely to find the relationship exciting and liberating.

The biggest surprise may be that even though you’ve been single for so long – you’re now ready to commit yourself to being with one person in a monogamous relationship or marriage. The very influence of Uranus transiting your 7th House is what will allow you to break free of your old singles life in favor of your new one as a married person.

When Will I Get Married?

The planets that are transiting your 7th House (and that aspect this House) will provide you with the timing for when you will meet a partner for marriage or actually get married. Are you curious to learn more about what your personal astrology says about your love relationships? If so, your astrological transits such as Jupiter and Uranus – will tell you how likely you are to find a romance this year. To find your personal transits go to the Free Transit Calculator and enter your birth date. The Real Food Cookbook: Traditional Dishes for Modern Cooks

When Nina Planck toured to promote her two earlier books, Real Food and Real Food for Mother and Baby, the question she heard most was, “When are you going to write a cookbook?” At long last, The Real Food Cookbook is here.

In a dietary landscape overfull with low-carb bread and dubious advice about triglycerides, Planck is revolutionary in her complete embrace of a more old-fashioned and diverse way of eating. Aptly described by the Washington Post as “a cross between Alice Water

Dan Pfeiffer Joins Medium: “Breaking Down the ‘Worst’ Year in Washington”

Today, Senior Advisor Dan Pfeiffer joined the new publishing platform Medium — authoring a post that reflects on the incredible amount of progress made in 2014 despite some claims that the President had "the worst year in Washington." Moving forward, he will continue to post important highlights, insights, and reflections on the President's agenda.

(For more posts from across the Administration, be sure to also follow President Obama and the White House on Medium, as well.)

In today's post, he reflects on 2014 as a year of real and meaningful progress for President Obama and the progressive agenda — no matter what the critics have said. He goes on to note a few meaningful progress points from the year:

  1. 2014 has been the strongest year of job growth since the 1990s.

  2. America's uninsured rate dropped to near-historic lows in 2014 — In spite of the fact that this time a year ago, politicians and the press were predicting the demise of the Affordable Care Act.

  3. The President made historic progress across the board on the central global challenge of the next century: Climate change and environmental protection.

  4. President Obama's Executive Action to fix our immigration system is the most meaningful effort in decades to make the system fairer, more transparent, and more predictable.

  5. In his six years in office, the President has reshaped the federal judiciary to include more women, minorities, gays, and lesbians, so it might resemble more closely the nation it serves.

Read the full post on Medium — and then share it with anyone you know who might need a reminder of exactly how much got done in 2014.

Thank You, America

From the report on torture issued last week by the U.S. Senate we can draw three lessons. The first is a terrible one, but the other two are encouraging.

The first thing the report teaches us is that it is indeed possible for the most prominent intelligence agency of the world’s most powerful democracy to commit torture on a large scale, to violate the most sacred international conventions, to operate secret prisons in friendly countries, and to lie — in short to operate illegally for six years running without reporting to its overseers or, what is even worse, by providing doctored reports. The president of the United States was unaware. His vice president, at least for the first year, also seemed to be in the dark. The Department of Justice, the Congress, and the press were systematically deceived. Not to mention what the current CIA director, John Brennan, revealed in his press conference of December 11: badly trained and inexperienced operatives, procedural conflicts with the FBI that could only have hampered the just fight against terrorism, the surreal yet very real risk that a judge might soon be compelled to release back into the wild a jihadist whose crimes were proven by illegal methods — in other words, a CIA that, in this battle so vital not only for the United States but for the world as a whole, navigated uncharted territory with the most complete and total amateurism. That is an alarming picture. It is the catastrophe scenario that the wildest anti-Americans, the most rapid conspiracy theorists, could not even imagine. And yet it happened.

The good news, by contrast, is that this same democracy has once again demonstrated its extraordinary vitality, its capacity to pull itself together, to confront its crimes, and, in criticizing itself, to rediscover its founding values. Oh, one can expound on the puritanism of an America obsessed with any stain that might tarnish its pastoral vision of itself (Philip Roth). Hard heads can always be found to mock the nostalgia for innocence that is so characteristic of this country (Tocqueville) and whose consequences are often ridiculous or absurd. Be that as it may, there was something beautiful in the spectacle offered to the world by Senator Dianne Feinstein as she read, in a voice full of with emotion, the summary of 500 pages that are so damning for her country. President Obama struck the right tone in the difficult task of upholding his responsibilities as commander in chief, charged with safeguarding the security of his fellow citizens, while ceding no ground on the principles that make up the nation’s credo — principles that are, in the last analysis, America’s best weapon against barbarism. The Republicans, for their part, found a voice worthy of their party’s great historical consciences in the person of Senator John McCain, who thundered, from the high ground of his own experience as a prisoner of war and victim of torture, that torture is not only sordid but ineffective. America is never so great as in such moments of crisis, doubt, and upset. It is never so strong as when it indulges its taste for the truth. As a citizen of a country that had to confront a similar situation during and after its war in Algeria, a country that spent not years but decades dismantling an official lie and acknowledging the extent of the crimes committed in France’s name, I can only salute, with deep humility, the example given here.

Especially since a third thing occurred at the same time and is perhaps the most important of all. We are well aware of the terms of a debate that is as old as torture itself but that has been recently revived by Michael Walzer and other thinkers: Torture is no doubt morally repugnant, the argument goes, but what else can we do when we know that a bomb has been set to explode and we have in custody the one who set it? Well, the most extraordinary thing about this austere report devoid of literary flourishes and embellishments is that it provides the irrefutable retort to the proponents of that theory disguised as an allegory. It does so by demonstrating, with ample evidence, that in the long war waged against terrorism, three things are true. First, the accurate information obtained by the CIA (Bin Laden’s location, for example) was acquired without recourse to torture. Second — consistent with the principle, understood in ancient Greece, that a tortured man loses all sense of reality and will say anything at all — most of the information obtained through torture proved false, fanciful, or useless. (That is the testimony of Mourad Benchellali, a French citizen confined for two and a half years in Guantanamo.) Third, we had detainees who talked without being tortured but then were tortured anyway in case that might make them say a little more, and we saw them either retreat into silence (witness Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the man behind the bombing of the USS Cole) or retract the information they had previously given and offer contradictory versions (as in the case of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed about the aborted attack on London’s Heathrow Airport).

Abject and useless. Transforming its victims into flayed meat for no purpose at all. That was Johanna’s response to Franz in Sartre’s The Condemned of Altona. That was Sartre, Camus, and Malraux against the supporters of “the question.” That is the lesson in practical philosophy that, from Capitol Hill, the American people have just given us.

Ho Ho Hum… No More Silly Holiday Eating Advice

Are you tired of it yet?

I’m not talking about the holiday shopping frenzy, the incessant holiday music, or the goodies everywhere. I’m talking about all of the “How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain” articles.

An online search for “How avoid holiday weight gain” turned up 4.2 million entries. If you read one article every minute, it would take you eight years to read them all – except the number of articles would continue to multiple while you were reading them!

Perhaps you recognize the story formula:

Cheery Opening + Fear Mongering + Clever Advice = “Newsworthy” Article that will attract fearful and/or hopeful eyeballs.

Here’s an example (with my interpretation of the messages in parentheses).

How to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

It’s that time of year: holiday parties, family dinners, and fudge in the break room. (Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!) To get a jump start on your New Year’s Resolutions (Never fear! There will be another article using the same formula on January 1st for all those who didn’t follow this holiday advice), follow these five simple rules. Did you ever notice that we often use odd numbers? Clever, isn’t it?

  • Eat before you go to a party so you won’t be tempted by all the goodies. (Really? Do you also recommend maxing out your credit cards before you go Christmas shopping?)
  • Wear tight clothing to the party to prevent yourself from overeating. (Feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious is a small price to pay to prevent yourself from enjoying your favorite food.)
  • Drink seltzer water with a squeeze of lime in place of eggnog with rum. (I don’t know many people who love eggnog, but for those who do, this is like recommending crunching on carrots when you love potato chips.)
  • Hold a glass and a plate so it’s impossible to eat. (You’ll look ridiculous trying to nibble a rolling meatball or sneaking slurps from the side of your cheesecake.)
  • Schedule a session with your personal trainer the next morning to burn off any extra calories that slipped by your radar. (The punishment must fit the crime.)

Ho Ho Hum

That kind of advice leads to conflicted, calorie-focused party goers. I follow a different formula:

Loving food more, not less = Balanced eating year round

Here’s the “healthy holiday” story using this formula instead.

Eat What You Love and Love What You Eat

It’s that time of year: holiday parties, family dinners, and fudge in the break room. There are so many opportunities to enjoy the foods you love, how will you decide when, what, and how much to eat? Here are five strategies to try while there are plenty of opportunities to experiment:

  • Trust your body wisdom. Tune into your signals of hunger and satiety to guide your eating before, during, and after the party. Being either famished or already full when you arrive sets you up for being uncomfortably full when you leave.
  • Treat yourself to pleasures besides food. Choose clothing that is beautiful, flattering, and comfortable so you feel and project your best.
  • Eat (and drink) what you really love. And skip anything that isn’t fabulous! The first few bites are for flavor, the rest are for fuel. (After the first few delicious bites, the flavor begins to fade anyway so you’re just eating a memory.)
  • Love what you eat. Sensuously savor one small bite at a time, appreciating the appearance, aromas, flavors, and textures of your favorite foods as you eat them.
  • Practice extreme self-care. Choose activities that are the most meaningful to you, stay active, and schedule down-time to relax and enjoy the holidays!

And a bonus tip: Stop reading those tired old articles and invest your time and energy in really celebrating the season, food and all!

The Gift of Time

I am my family’s orchestrator-in-chief for the holidays and I am not ready. There’s always a last minute rush for me, but this year business trips and other obligations mean there’s no card yet, the tree got decorated yesterday and only a handful of gifts have been purchased. As I finally kick my efforts into gear, I can’t help but remember a recent December when things were very different.

The alarm went off at 5:15 a.m. on Christmas morning. I shook my husband awake. We tiptoed to the room where our three boys were sleeping, placed a small gift at the foot of each bed, and left a note ostensibly from Santa Claus.

And we were done.

For the first time, we were in a hotel for the holidays instead of a family home. Five months earlier, we had moved from New York to Hong Kong. It felt too soon to go back for a visit, and we wanted to explore this side of the globe. So we had planned a trip.

This was way out of my holiday comfort zone. My approach had always been as traditional as the turkey my mother and I prepared for the big feast. That routine could be stressful and was certainly time-consuming, but it was also lovely — full of excited children, extended family (more festive than fractious for me), tree trimming, gift buying and wrapping (I do love curling ribbon), and lots of cooking. There were inside jokes and bits of kitsch like the two-foot high light-up plastic snowman my husband found at a stoop sale to keep things personal and not overly precious.

In Hong Kong, we were all a little homesick and a lot nostalgic. The small tree in our apartment was cute, but a far cry from the 10-footers we usually had. The decorations consisted of two boxes of silver ornaments from the local IKEA instead of our eclectic collection of family treasures. Our early “Christmas” dinner featured pork roast instead of a turkey because that was all that would fit in my tiny oven. My mother and her partner flew over so we weren’t without family, but my brother’s family and my aunts and uncles were in America. We gave gifts ahead of time and got on a plane.

The 25th found us in a secluded little resort in New Zealand.

“Should we go back to bed?” I asked my husband, Mark, after we’d left our small presents. It was 5:25. The sky outside was brightening.

“Let’s sit,” he suggested. He made tea for me, and coffee for himself, and we sat in the two Adirondack chairs on our room’s small deck with the quilt from our bed spread across our knees.

The deck faced west over a bay hemmed in by hills. As the sun rose behind us, the view was suffused with soft bands of gray, then blue, then pink. The light first touched the tops of the mountain at the far end of the bay, then washed down to meet the water and back across the hills to the left and right as if someone had cracked open a lid in the sky. A multitude of shades of green were revealed among the Douglas firs and palm trees covering the hillsides. A bellbird sang. Water lapped the shore.

For two hours, Mark and I sat and took in the quiet beauty, sometimes talking, sometimes just looking out at the water.

The day would bring no grand present opening and no homemade feast to enjoy, but there was also, in those early hours, no stuffing to start, no breakfast for 12 or 15 to organize, no leftover scraps of paper and ribbon strewn across my bedroom floor. There would be no toys to put together and no bags of trash to wrestle to the cans outside.

Instead, the day brought more little pockets of found time. Even the vacation-induced sense that you ought to be out seeing and doing was absent: everything was closed; there was no car or boat available to take us anywhere. When the boys woke, we took them for a hike in the hills. Along the way, I walked a little bit with each of them and talked. We sang childish songs they’d normally insist they’d outgrown.

Then we joined my mother and her partner for lunch at the hotel. It wasn’t the meal I would have cooked, but it was fine. We four adults finished the afternoon on the porch with a bottle of wine while the boys played on the beach and someone else did the dishes.

I did miss the rest of my family, the splendor of our usual tree and the delicious anticipation of that moment before anything is opened. I did miss the turkey and the apple pie. I knew even then that I would take special pleasure in the familiar when next I celebrated at home, and I did.

But that Christmas was a lovely unhurried day in a beautiful place we felt lucky to see. Whole hours were completely free of the pressure — external or internal — to do or go or make or fix or care-take or otherwise be productive. By day’s end, I had cherished my husband, laughed and sung with my children, had a deep conversation with my mother. I had gotten some exercise, written in my journal and even had a nap.

After the stress of a global move and its accompanying culture shock, it was as if a thoughtful friend had carefully considered what gift would be most useful and most appreciated and she had chosen time. It’s just what I wanted, I thought, How did you know?

This year, I’m happy to be home, but my gift to myself is to cross just a few things off my to-do list — undone — in favor of finding and savoring some moments of peace.

A Work of Heart

“Each of us has been given a special gift just for entering — so you are already a winner.”
– Swami Beyondananda

Conventional wisdom tells us that in times of economic contraction, the appropriate thing is to shrink things down, to do less, to get smaller. Given how well conventional wisdom seems to be working lately, maybe some unconventional wisdom is called for.

Our friend who is a Feng Shui practitioner says that when an item breaks, it should be replaced with something more valuable.

So when something in our life “breaks” — we lose a position or job or anything we’ve held dear — maybe it’s a call for something greater. Maybe being downsized out of a job is a call to “upsize” to encompass your true and unique “work of heart”.

Through our own recent journey that we dubbed “involuntary simplicity,” Trudy and I have had to release structures (like a home) and usual ways of doing things that would have kept us in a comfortable – yet smaller – life. Bigger life and smaller life are not egotistical distinctions, but rather have to do with how deeply, how broadly and how fully we express that which calls us.

Sometimes it comes in the form of a whisper, other times as a shout — this calling, whatever it is, always gives us a tingle of excitement and can also evoke a big “uh-oh.” What if I do this and I fail? What if I let people down? What if I make a fool of myself?

And then — what if I never try? What if I dismiss the gift that has been given to me, and it never gets shared? What if I play it safe?

These callings, these works of heart, may not be grandiose at all. They may seemingly impact very few people, but the love for doing that thing – whatever it is – is so palpable that anyone in that individual’s field feels inspired.

Other people — who have a bigger dream– may stop before they start because they cannot imagine being able to pull it off. So they pull the plug to preempt the discomfort of disappointment.

As the old saying goes: Ships are safe inside the harbor, but is that what ships are for?

Transformational, evolutionary change is occurring on a fractal level, meaning that the same patterns are repeating with the individual, the community, our species as a whole. Our entire species is being called forth to think and act in loving accord, even though this has never happened before. And each and every one of us has a “work of heart” to offer, some contribution to make that serves the greater good – and brings us satisfaction and fulfillment. There is something that we do that lights us up, and that light shines on all who come into contact with us. This is the domain where there is no competition. Or as Oscar Wilde famously said, “Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.”

So… what is your work of heart?

What contribution — grand or modest, private or public — do you have to make to the greater good of all? Is it a project or idea of your own design, or something that already exists that you fervently want to advance? Does it involve working alone, or with a team? How will your world — and THE world — be different or better if you share it? What fears come up? What inspiration is lighting your way?

Thirty years ago this month, I attended a seminar that offered a life-changing challenge: What is it you are here to do, and how long are you going to wait to do it?

I realized I wanted to pursue humor as a fulltime career … and … I hadn’t the slightest clue how I would do that. Nonetheless, I took it on. I jumped, and hoped the parachute would open. I had been writing the Swami Beyondananda column for a few years, and a friend suggested I perform comedy as the Swami. It had never occurred to me. Soon after, I was invited to a weeklong retreat where Swami made his debut on stage. The next month, I met Trudy and after a few dates, she said, “Why don’t we go out on the road and do a show with dance and comedy?”

We tested the premise, and exactly two years after the seminar, we left Michigan in a brand new van and elegant trailer on what has now been a 28-year journey. We had no idea how any of this could or would come about. All we knew is we had a work of heart to share, and the richness of our lives today — the things we’ve experienced, places we’ve been, people we’ve met and lifelong friends we’ve made — all stemmed from that choice to share it.

Today I have new works of heart on the horizon that build on the old and cover new territory. I remember how effortlessly things flowed three decades ago, and I wonder if I can recapture or rekindle that innocent trust in these less innocent times. In any case, the calling calls. You will hear more about these as things unfold.

Meanwhile … what is your work of heart?

How long will you wait to do it?

Unconventional wisdom says, now is the time. Because it’s too late to do it sooner.

You show me yours, and I’ll show you mine. Send me a brief note about your work of heart — remember, putting it in writing makes it more real than it is now — and I will send you info on MY work of heart!

“America’s Resurgence Is Real”: President Obama Reflects on 2014

President Obama Speaks at Year-End Press Conference

As 2014 winds down, President Obama stopped by the press briefing room in the White House to offer his thoughts on what the past year has meant for the country. "I said that 2014 would be a year of action and would be a breakthrough year for America," he said. "And it has been."

Here's a look at what happened this year, in the President's own words:

Cutting Holes in the Law

Opposition to faith-based legal exemptions is about equality, not payback.

“I’m sorry, but we don’t serve your kind here.”

This overt discrimination is something that leading gay libertarians, who otherwise support marriage equality, think should be legal for wedding photographers, bakers, and other business owners to say to gay couples. (The libertarians’ side lost when the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the Elane Photography case.) They believe that government, as much as possible, should leave people alone.

It is true that government regulation can go too far, hampering businesses and treating adults like children who need constant supervision. One can easily compile horror stories portraying an out-of-control “nanny government.” I would say that generally, government should protect us not from ourselves but from one another. When your cigarette smoke invades my airspace, or when your gun obsession endangers schoolchildren, or when you try to impose your faith’s “thou shalt nots” in the public marketplace, then we are headed for trouble.

An upstate New York couple that rents facilities on their farm for weddings was fined $ 13,000 under the state’s Human Rights Law in August for turning away a lesbian couple. David Boaz of the Cato Institute tweeted sarcastically on Dec. 9, “Let’s go around fining everyone $ 13,000 to show the need for tolerance.” Stephen H. Miller of IGF CultureWatch criticized it as “payback.”

Pardon me, but discriminators are not the aggrieved party. This is not about provoking discrimination to seek punishment for homophobes. Most gay people simply want to go about their business without being degraded and denied service. But fines are a means of enforcement. A prohibition without penalties is merely a suggestion.

The Michigan House of Representatives recently passed a bill modeled on the 1993 federal Religious Freedom and Restoration Act, which featured in the Hobby Lobby case. The Michigan measure may allow emergency medical technicians to invoke “sincerely held religious beliefs” in refusing to serve LGBT people.

Where will religious demands in daily commerce end? If you view conscience clauses only in terms of gay families, the problem might seem limited. But what about people who object to interracial marriage or to second or third marriages after divorce? Assuming that gay conservatives are motivated by more than axe grinding against gay liberals, why does their solicitude for the religious right appear reserved for gay-related cases?

If an anti-gay Christian receives legal exemptions, why should a Christian Scientist parent opposed to modern medicine not be exempt from child welfare laws? Why should a Muslim devoted to the subordination of women (which, to be fair, is disputed within Islam) not invoke Sharia law? Satanists, amusingly, have already responded to a Ten Commandments monument at the Oklahoma state capitol by demanding equal placement of a monument to the demon Baphomet.

Whether you are an EMT who deplores gender nonconformity, a pharmacist who anathematizes birth control, a county clerk who opposes gay marriage, or a police officer whose faith forbids interracial marriage, you should separate your beliefs from your duties or find other work. To call my position intolerance on my part is to turn the truth on its head. None of those prospective customers is trying to change your beliefs; they just want to be treated the same as others. (I should note that libertarians do not object to nondiscrimination laws as applied to government; they object to imposing them on private businesses.)

To keep from swirling into chaos, we must resist letting individuals cut holes in the law to reflect their personal list of abominations. Unacknowledged privilege lurks at the heart of the demand for faith-based exemptions. Put the shoe on the other foot, and it may dawn on people that their intolerance can come back to bite them.

Living in a diverse society obliges us to put up with one another’s differences. Getting clever and insisting that your difference requires intolerance of mine will not do. I will not be a second-class citizen, wondering whether my marriage will be recognized in this shop, and whether whether my prescription will meet with the pharmacist’s approval in that drugstore.

America is fractious and fragmented enough in the ordinary course of things. To preserve civil society, we cannot permit ad hoc exclusions from equal protection.

The Feeling To Ignore When You’re On An Emotional Roller Coaster (VIDEO)

When we’re feeling stressed, it’s easy to spin out of control and let our emotions take over. Is it your ego talking? Is it fear? Progressive pastor and spiritual thinker Rob Bell, star of the new series “The Rob Bell Show,” explains which feelings to trust — and which to ignore — when you’re on an emotional roller coaster ride.

“One of the most helpful things is to get it outside of you,” Bell tells #OWNSHOW. Ask yourself: What of this is real and what of this is fear over things that may never happen?

Many times, Bell says, we have anxiety over an event that may never transpire. The present, he explains, is what you should put your trust in. “What are the few things that are actually relevant for this moment?” he says.

For example, let’s say you’re feeling incredibly stressed about an upcoming event. “Can I do anything about that?” Bell says to ask yourself. “No, because it’s next Thursday. OK, then I don’t have any space to stress about it.”

If you’re finding it difficult to focus on the present, Bell says the key is to take a moment to step back. “Part of it is just seeing it,” he says. “And almost being an observer — learning to be an observer of your own emotions.”

More from Rob Bell: How to start the healing after you’ve been betrayed.

“The Rob Bell Show” premieres Sunday, December 21 at 7 p.m. ET on OWN.
